Hi Paul

I think what you're hoping to do is definitely possible - but I'm pretty sure you'll need a visa of some sort (whether it's working holiday or something similar), and I've no idea how easy it will be to get a longer term visa after that (perhaps others who've dealt with that can offer advice).

There's certainly plenty of opportunities for good Ruby developers here in Melbourne, and I'm sure in Sydney and elsewhere.

If you are _in_ Argentina, why would you need a visa?

An Australia company can get workers from offshore without sponsoring people, e.g., every call centre in India.

Likewise, an Australian can export work to, say, the US without a visa.

Sorry, I missed the 'working remotely' bit. Phil's right, you shouldn't need a visa to contract for an Australian company.

There is plenty of demand for Ruby developers in Sydney and Melbourne. It's definitely possible to land a job once you're here.

Remote work isn't as common so don't be discouraged if you find it difficult to source remote work before traveling here. Most Australian companies I know want their Ruby developers to work from an office, at least some of the time.

I'm going to apply for a permanent visa next year to go to live in Sydney / Melbourne

It can take up to 12 months to process a skilled migrant visa. If you would like to live in Australia next year, consider applying for your visa soon. Once you have your visa there is usually lots of time before you have to arrive here. I'm no migration expert however, so verify this with a migration agent.

Hi Paul,

In addition to what the others have said, I'd say read up on the
different types of Australian visas available, and whether a working
relationship with an Australian company is beneficial to them. It's
probably not relevant to your situation, but I remember when I moved
to the UK that the visa I was originally on specifically disallowed
existing work arrangements with UK companies. (I daresay you're going
for a more "serious" visa though.)

Also, I'd find out what the tax implications are for you locally and
in Australia if you work remotely. It looks like Argentina has a tax
treaty with Australia, but I have precisely zero knowledge of how that
works in detail.
