Hi Everyone,

I'm stumped as to how to combat a recurring problem. We seem to have to restart our resin server nightly in order to clear PS Old Gen memory. Somewhere this memory is not being released and once it fills the system comes to a crawl. Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

Thanks
Deane

Deane,

First of all have a look at FusionReactor in order to surround the problem.

I guess in every cases where I have seen this behaviour show up it was an application problem like:

-          too many sessions keeping too much data

-          not released application scope data

-          regular memory '"leak" problem within the app (have a look here: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/j-leaks/)

-          Wrong memory settings

These are things we deal with day in day out in our professional support. If you need us, let us know...

Deane,

In the past I just profiled my application's memory usage.  Not a real fun process.  I used the Rocket JRE which has some great tools for looking at the heap.  But I don't know if you can get a trail version any longer.

Thanks to everyone who answered. I actually solved the problem but it was nothing to do with my code. I removed MessageBroker and all the AMF/Flex stuff (We don't use it) and memory has been behaving. If it is still good in a couple days I will post a main thread and submit a bug report.

Deane,

please post more about this.
Can be interesting for further optimizations.
Did you remove flex/flash servlets from the server or just from a web context?
