First way: USB-connected printer. The current Samsung Universal Printer Driver is at version 3 which does not support my printer. Download version 2 and execute the installer in winXP compatibility mode. My driver showed up in the version 3 installation of the application.

Note: I had a difficult time installing the HP driver since the installer wanted to connect my printer. I let it connect to a new printer port at (note the IPv4 is a sample address) :631/printers/Samsung_ML-1740 and it resulted in a non-working printer. I ended up browsing the printer at \\192.168.1.2 where the printer showed up. I did a right-click to "connect" and specified the HP postscript driver.

I'm searching for someone who can share the samsung ml-1740 laser jet printer driver with me. HP support says that printer driver is obsolete and can't be found on their end. I no longer have my installation cd. Thanks in advance for your help.

CNET recorded modest performance scores for the ML-1740. Though Samsung claims a 17-pages-per-minute (ppm) engine speed, the 1740 prints ordinary text at 13.0ppm--fine for a home office--and grayscale graphics at 13.3ppm. We like the printer's crisp black text, which is free of choppy-edged curves and diagonals; however, the letters break up a bit on small fonts. Grayscale graphics suffer from a somewhat dotty texture and mild banding, but neither defect seriously detracts from print quality.

Among its drawbacks, the ML-1740 ships with a starter 1,000-page cartridge, so you'll soon have to replenish the toner. The standard 3,000-page cartridge costs about $80, or 2.7 cents per page--a little more than the toner-and-imaging drum for most monochrome printers.

Although the printer comes with a parallel port and a slow USB 1.1 port, it doesn't offer networking or paper-handling options, so you can't print from more than one computer, zip through double-sided documents, or print long documents without refilling the paper tray. Perhaps worse, the ML-1740's modest 8MB of memory can't be expanded, though that's fine for a single user. What's the ML-1740's most flexible feature? Although it doesn't support Macs, the printer will work with several flavors of Linux. The compact ML-1740 is also easy to pop into a car if you need to travel with it.

1) A Linux driver is included on the CD that comes with the printer, or it can be downloaded from Samsung.Get the Linux driver package (one package for all models from Samsung's web site.Note: You cannot just use the PPD coming with Samsungs's driver package with CUPS/Ghostscript. You must also install the proprietary Samsung driver applications, as well as the PPD.2) Or, you can try using the configuration for the Samsung ML-1710 printer, which several users have reported to work (see information page for that printer). Please see the comments in the GDI driver section below re issues with landscape printing. Consumables/Refills: toner cartridge (3,000 pages, $70 US)

gdi &nbsp(driver home page) For the ghostscript GDI driver and ML-1710 PPD: * Portrait printing is slightly off-center * Landscape printing does not work correctly; only half the page is printed, and it is offset 50% up the page.
This driver is free software.
Type: Ghostscript built-inDownload:PPD file: View PPD, directly download PPD

Also, if a printer is set up twice with different drivers it doesn't work with any of them. So you should only have one printer in Settings > Printers (per each device). You can have both driver packs installed on your system, though.

Samsung ML-1740 Printer Driver is licensed as freeware for PC or laptop with Windows 32 bit and 64 bit operating system. It is in printers category and is available to all software users as a free download.

If the driver listed is not the right version or operating system, search our driver archive for the correct version. Enter Samsung ML-1740 into the search box above and then submit. In the results, choose the best match for your PC and operating system.

Once you have downloaded your new driver, you'll need to install it. In Windows, use a built-in utility called Device Manager, which allows you to see all of the devices recognized by your system, and the drivers associated with them.

Hello Experts,
does anyone of you know how to get the above mentioned printer running under opensuse 11.2 ? It looks like that there is no driver available. With the previous version all worked fine.
Suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks for your reply.
I was looking around and found a Unified Linux Driver.
The printer is working but the quality is not quite good.
The download of foo2qpdl was quite slow and stopped at 17%.
The splix driver prints an error msg like this:

I would say that if the reason you bought the printer was that the packaging claimed support for linux (like I did with my scx-4200), demand a refund and tell them you are reporting them for false advertising.
Only then will manufacturers like Samsung seriouslystart supporting linux.
My scx-4200 had similar problems, but 2 years later works without Samsung drivers.
Like all cheap printers, the cost price is low but the running costs are high compared to some of the more expensive brands. Over the lifetime of the printer this makes a difference!
(I still run my old hp 4L which I bought new nearly 20 years ago!)

Don't click the Blue Download Box. That will not get you legitimate drivers. Further down the page you will see Universal Print Driver. That will download from HP's site. HP bought out the Samsung printer division.

Other checking if the printer is offline I would check the Samsung links here. Click the support link which takes you to HP. I could not find drivers for your specific printer at HP. Most Samsung printers listed used the Universal Print Driver.

I wish I knew! I tried so many things. But I know I removed the existing printer driver from my computer that didn't belong. Apparently when the guy replaced my hard drive, he added a driver for a printer I didn't have. Then I downloaded the Samsung universal print driver and when I got to the screen where it said "select" your device, I checked the box next to the name of my printer. I'd previously not checked that. Sorry I can't be more detailed.

The ML-1740 is a great printer, and the price just makes it that much better! I have used it now for over two weeks and have had no issues with it. This is really good since on the South Jersey shore it is very humid right now, and the printer had no problems with the damp paper.

Recommendation: For novice Windows users, we highly recommend downloading a driver update tool like DriverDoc [Download DriverDoc - Product by Solvusoft] to help update your Samsung Laser Printer drivers. This driver update utility makes sure that you are getting the correct drivers for your ML-1740 and operating system version, preventing you from installing the wrong drivers.

ML-1740 errors can be related to corrupt or outdated device drivers. PC drivers can become problematic without any obvious cause. The exciting news is that you can likely update the Laser Printer device drivers in order to avoid malfunctions.

Downloading the correct drivers for a ML-1740-related hardware device can be difficult because of the lack of sources, and difficulties locating them on the official Samsung website. Even for someone who is experienced at finding, downloading, and manually updating ML-1740 drivers, the process can still be exceptionally tedious and extremely annoying. Driver versions that are incorrect will cause more complications with your PC's performance, sometimes causing more damage.

Using a driver upgrade application can allow drivers to update without difficulty. A driver update tool provides you with new driver versions for your hardware, and can also save a backup of current drivers before making any changes. Using a backup driver system helps you to rollback any driver to the previous version if a problem arises.

Samsung-GDI is an open-source printer driver for Ghostscript supporting 26 Samsung-GDI printers. On Mac OS X Jaguar and later, printing with Samsung-GDI requires Foomatic-RIP (a CUPS filter script) and Ghostscript (an open-source PostScript interpreter), and a foomatic PPD for each supported printer.Installation Notes

In addition, this unit also has a Samsung TonerSave Button that allows you to save up to 40% toner. This laser printer is the perfect choice for use in the office, home or dormitory. The following software applies to the Samsung ML-1740 printer series.

The driver installer file automatically installs the driver for your printer. This is a driver-only software solution intended for users who want a print driver to use for Samsung ML-1740 Series Print Driver.
