Hi Everyone!   The cost for the Van 2 rental at pickup is $357 which does not include insurance charges or gas. We used this type of van for a couple of races already and the average gas usage was about 1 full tank of gas (20 gallon-tank at 18-20 mpg). So 20 gallons of gas at an average of $3.60 per gallon (based on Wickenburg and Tempe rates) would roughly cost $72.    The insurance rates are quite high but not needed if each driver is covered by their respective insurance company.  My company, USAA does cover me for rental vehicles. We should have at least one other driver in Van 2, preferably someone who is covered by their respective insurance company.    Do we have another person in Van 2 who is covered for rental vehicles and would like to be another driver?  If so, we can avoid additional insurance fees (can be as high as $50 per day).   The amount per person in Van 2 without paying insurance fees would be $71.  We can settle the fees up Thursday night and if any more charges are added (additional driver fees, insurance fees, or more gas) we can work that into the per person amount.     Rental Fees w/o Insurance    $357   Estimated Fuel                       $  72   Total                                       $429   Est. per person                       $  71     Note: With minimal insurance coverage, the additional fees could be as high as $25 more per person.

I am happy to drive (and I drove all but the end of a Ragnar in Van 2 once) & I'd be insured with the rental car, but not for the "Loss of Use" if we have an accident. So, I'd prefer us to buy the additional insurance if I'm a driver. Normally, I'd take care of that by renting the vehicle w/ one of my credit cards -- they cover that extra insurance bit.

Also, I agree w/ Keith's van gas mileage guess (that is what we needed when I drove a white van for Ragnar). I AM comfortable paying my portion of the extra insurance, if we need to do that. We can vacuum it out, if necessary, at my parents' place. Or, I'm willing to chip in for cleaning if that is necessary.

It is supposed to RAIN on Friday, so concern about mud isn't actually a "odd chance." situation.

My insurance would likely cover collision and liability but does not cover the "all events" and non-use for rentals.  When we did Las Vegas we took out that extra so we didn't have to worry about cleaning it up or removing the graffiti.  I think it's a good investment.

Excellent...unless someone wants us to get the insurance to be sure, it sounds like we do not need the extra insurance on Van 2.

 

Are there any Van 2 runners that want the insurance as a precaution?  If one person does then we should just get it and add the $25 per person.
