The Board of Governors of IIT Madras has in 2016 created Institute Chair positions, both named and otherwise, to recognize senior faculty who are doing outstanding research, teaching, sponsored projects, consultancy, institute/national service, etc. The Board has also put in place a rigorous process for selecting occupants for the Institute Chairs.
These Chairs will be named if a donor creates an endowment for it, and will be called "XXX Institute Chair". Till such time an endowment is made, a non-endowed Chair will simply be referred to as Institute Chair. A non-endowed Chair can become a named Chair as soon as an endowment is received.
The occupant of an Institute Chair will receive Rs.25,000/- per month as honorarium. The occupant may use the title, and if it is a named Chair, it is incumbent on the occupant to use the full title "XXX Institute Chair". The title and the honorarium are for a period of five years, after which there will be a review for continuation.
I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected as
Institute Chair with effect from April 1, 2019. The Institute is proud of your contributions to your field as well as to the Institute. We look forward to many more stellar contributions from you. We also look forward to
your contributions to the growth of our Institute as one of its thought leaders.
We will be announcing the names of the Institute Chairs immediately. It will take us some time to change the titles on the website, telephone book, etc.
My heartiest congratulations to you on being bestowed this singular honour by the Institute.
With warm regards,
Sincerely yours,
Bhaskar Ramamurthi
