Theonly adjustment on my LX178 is a spring hook that is locatedon the sheet metal under the right rear fender. If you need totighten the belt a little, you can pull the spring back to the rearposition.
There is no spring...The answer above the owner obviously doesnot own a 178. The only correct way to tighten the idler pulley isto remove the belt guard from around the idler pulley then loosenthe idler pulley bolt. Slide the pulley forward ( there will onlybe about a 3/4" slot to slide). To do this you first remove thedeck and make sure the brake is on and locked in the park positionto relieve tension off of the belt. You could also shorten the rodthat connects to the top of the hydrostat drive to the brakelinkage but this is not advisable because you can cause the tractorto drift when in a neutral state. If your pulley is all the wayforward then it is advisable to buy a new belt.
