Appliance epoxy paint is also available in a can like regular house paint and can be rolled on. This would be a much better option if you wanted to completely change the color of your washing machine and dryer.

First, I removed everything from the areas I was going to paint and wiped down the washer and dryer with a damp cloth and paper towels. I even got out some Q-Tips and cleaned the tiny little nooks and crannies. My appliances were already looking better!

Then I hung some old sheets to protect the laundry closet walls and an old rug on the floor in front. I know from past experiences spray painting indoors that those little paint molecules settle ALL OVER THE ROOM.

These might be at your local hardware store but since I have Amazon Prime I ordered from them and received my appliance paint in two days! Here are a few of the products I found on Amazon. I used the two Rustoleum products.

This looks great. Totally need to do this here at home. I have no clue how it got to be so scratched up! I found you on the Thrifty Thursday Link Party! So glad I did! Looking forward to future posts!

Even though you say your washing machine was ten years old, I was surprised at the condition of your machine before you painted it. When the Sears technician comes to do an annual checkup, he always tells me that my machines look like new even if they are several years old. The tech says he sees a lot of machines that are newer than mine that are in awful condition. Why are people so careless? I always leave the top open after I use it in order to let the machine dry out. If people took care of their expensive appliances, they would not have to paint them or do touch-ups on them. But you did a good job improving the looks of your machine.

After the homeowners moved the appliances back into the room later that day, I was able to apply my vinyl letters on the dryer control panel. In hindsight, the lettering was a little small for my machine to cut well, something I wish I had known prior to painting over the original ones. I might have left that part white. But I eventually got everything cut and placed where it belonged.

I waited a day or two before giving the gray paint and vinyl lettering a clear topcoat. Though the paint I used was made for metal, I wanted to make sure the paint stood the best chance of survival against all of the abuse these appliances take in a week. So I used this clear matte topcoat.

Laundry rooms can be, well, boring. My big project this month has been to slowly turn our laundry room into a space that's pleasant, organized and has some personality. The first project I tackled was our stripes and dots washer and dryer!

So, full disclosure, I really wanted to paint them. Like SO badly. I spent a long time researching high heat/appliance-appropriate paints. It's still on my "maybe someday" list, but I chose not to paint them because all of the paints were sprays, which would mean lugging the appliances outside for paint, dry and cure time. Since I don't have a garage it didn't seem practical, and so I started looking for options that could be done indoors instead. In the end, I'm so happy with the result, so it all worked out! A lot of projects turn out that way: One idea evolves into the next!We did a lot of testing before committing to electrical tape. There are a lot of other options including our second choice, vinyl, that would also work. In the end we chose electrical tape because it was so quick and easy to get the perfect stripes we wanted.

There are a few things you should know about electrical tape. It's awesome, because it is completely removable and therefore renter-friendly! All of the colors we have tried have come off with no residue (see above) except for black. BUT I wanted needed black and white stripes. So after our test run, when we used Goo Gone to remove the residue and it came off quickly and easily! So, if you're like me and just have to use black tape, be sure to remember you'll need Goo Gone if you ever choose to remove the tape in the future!

To get the dots we used plastic (like what you would find a toy packaged in) to adhere the tape to, then we cut dots through both layers with scissors and peeled the tape off the plastic and used it for the dots pattern. This project took two rolls of black electrical tape and about three hours to complete. I can't wait to share the rest of the room with you soon (it's still a work in progress!) Hope your day is great today. xo. Elsie

Elsie, this is so great that is totally my dream and I so want to do this as good as you have done! How many dots and stripes did it take you to do this, just to get an idea? This is so fun!!! I gotta do this. White washer and dryers are less expensive and I prefer a top load washer and front load dryer so this is just perfect Thank you so much for sharing this cutsir idea!

I just did this with my washer and dryer! My hand cut circles were awful. Completely awful. Because my washer and dryer and are smaller than average, I ended up using a hole punch to create perfect circles. It was very time consuming because the dots were so small, but I love it now that it is (finally) done.

And then I decided to finally repaint the laundry room with a cleaner feeling, fresh coat of paint. Want to see what the laundry room looked like before? You can see the before pictures on this older Laundry Room post. We made a few more changes in here that I will share with you later.

Here is how we made our pedestal. You can make one similar to ours but remember to make sure to get your measurements and adjust them for your particular washer and dryer and room constraints. We used the following items:

First we measured the width and depth of our washer and dryer and then added two inches to each length so the completed pedestal would have one inch of excess on the front and each side of the machines.

I forgot to take a picture of it in the building process, but you can see where we added it in the pictures below. We also added some decorative corner molding to the two front sides and a 2 inch strip of MDF down the front center of the pedestal too.

The hard part was maneuvering it into place because it was such a beast. But we managed. Then to get the washer and dryer onto it without damaging it, we placed the washer and dryer onto a towel on top of the pedestal. This allowed us to push them back without scratching the top. Then we simply tilted the machines and pulled the towel out from under it. We decided against adding some storage space in our pedestal simply because we are fortunate enough to have a room with plenty of storage. So adding drawers or cubby holes could be an option if you need more storage space. Phew! I hope I explained that well enough for you to understand. Please leave a comment if you need further clarification and I will be happy to try and answer your questions.

No Problem Mary. You are right. There is a piece of decorative trim molding around the top edge. We basically built a box frame and then added strips of flat straight mdf boards. Then on the top we put a small quarter round molding. We just glued it and nailed it around the top edges. Does that make more sense?

Thank you SO much for posting this tutorial! I have had my washer and dryer for about 8 years and did not buy the pedestals at the time. I have regretted it ever since. I have looked into buying them but my set is a pewter color and they no longer make that color. I just saw a similar idea about the wooden ones on Pinterest and was just telling my husband this past weekend that I want him to help me make some. I am dying to revamp my laundry room this winter. This tutorial will make it SO much easier! Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks for sharing that. It makes it worth it even if it helps just one person. Glad you will be able to use it. Feel free to ask any more questions as you get going if needed. I would love to see it as well!

I love the contrast of the light walls/floor/curtains and the black cabinets. If it were me i would paint the pedestal black as well to match. I think it looks odd being the only one that is white, and i think the room would be a little too vanilla if the cabinets were all white.

Keep the black cabinets! I love the color of the walls with the white trim and I think the pop of darker color on the cabinets, which coordinates with the curtains and the rug pulls it all together and makes it interesting. Nice job!

We made sure that the cat still had room to get into the cabinet through the cat door. It is a little bit tighter squeeze but he can still get in there. That was an important item for me. Wanted to still hide evidence of being a cat owner ;)

Looks great! The before and after pics are like a totally different room. My friend and I started a laundry service from our homes a few years ago. When we started we decided that we should probably upgrade our washers and dryers. I like you did not want to pay the extra $200+ for the ones that came with the set. I think you may have just added a project to my husbands honey do list ;) Thanks for the post!

We did leave room behind the machines and the pedestal for our dryer vent. The one we have is fairly flexible. We also left room for it on the side by the window where the outdoor wall vent is as well. You will definitely want to take all of that needed space into account when building your pedestals.

Saturate the stain with a mix of half detergent, half warm water and blot it vigorously with a rag or paper towel. Rinse and repeat until the paint is gone or no longer coming up. (Care tip: Spot test a small, hidden part of the garment first to ensure that none of these agents ruin/discolor the fabric.)
