As the show goes on, we encounter Ozen, who reveals a sobering truth through her talk - that the abyss is full of despair and suffering. However, until we reach episode 10, we still don't truly understand the weight and consequences of our protagonists' decision to go to the bottom.
I really wanted to love this anime. The visuals, the OST, the story, it was all beautiful. If I could ignore the bad sides, this anime would be a top 5-10 for me. But I cant just ignore this. In fact its made me so angry for existing that Im writing this in the first place. The farther I got into this anime, the more I felt like I was just watching a lolicon erotica. Let me explain.
The audio, on the other hand, is a treat. I spent the ticket money expecting the best rendition of the OST I'll ever hear, and the movie certainly delivered. Pathway and Tomorrow were both absolutely exceptional. I could recall two pieces that where never in the OST: A bit that played over the intro at the very beginning of the movie, which is in-line with the style of the rest of the OST; and the actual "ED" over the end credits, which had been moved to the end of the movie, leaving the Tomorrow sequence without credits. The name of the ED song is "ReBirth", and I don't think I've been able to locate it anywhere yet. The song is somewhat similar to Hanazeve Caradhina in that the lyrics are in a language I don't understand (likely made up too), but in a different style. It's still very obviously Kevin Penkin's work though.
Why did he made a bridge for animals to invade the village? Reg wasn't able to convince Faputa to reevaluate her goals, so he chose a more blunt approach (letting wildlife beat some sense into her).
It is my belief that Made in abyss is not in the genre of science fiction nor is it in the genre of fantasy. It falls right between the two. sadly there is not really a genre for made in abyss.... in the English language that is. In the realm of French literature and cinema there exists a genre called ""Fantastique"" and it is IMO the most fitting genre for MIA.
So this would mean Made in abyss leans more towards being a Fantasy. but my counter argument would be that the reason most characters lack the unwillingness to believe the supernatural occurrences is simply due to the fact that most of them were raised in a culture surrounding the abyss since they were born or since they were young.
The only exception to this is Bondrewd since he doesn't seem to be native to Orth and probably only found out about the existence of the abyss at a later point in his life. Bondrewd's foreignness and general personality could be the reason why he is so obsessed with knowledge and why he wants to experiment on pretty much anything unexplainable or supernatural, I.E attempting to capture the Riko squad solely because their existence is very much dependent on the abyss, with Riko only living because of the supernatural abilities of the abyss' relics quite literally being made in abyss. and Reg also being a supreme treasure of the netherworld and also being made in abyss. and Nanachi just because of all the narehate shenanigans they entail.
Case in point, Bondrewd is the way he is because of his unwillingness to believe the supernatural forces at bay in the abyss, always trying to find out the logic behind it using science and whatnot.
After rereading all the chapters of the manga trying to figure out what we can and cannot know about someof the mysteries of the world and the abyss itself, I came into some conclusions and hypothesis, (followed by how could I reach them) even though some of them may sound pretty obvious, I would like to share and discuss these things as there are some many hints and details that one can easily miss or forget about them...
-the similarities between the Abyss and a black hole
At first whenever I thought of the abyss and the nature of its ''curse'' I always thought of the phenomenon of Decompression sickness divers face when ascending from the depths of the ocean, and although I still think there are many parallels between them, there's still another thing in our world that has even more similarities with the Abyss; the black holes, yes. Like black holes, light can enter it but it can't get out, and the force needed to get out exponencially increases the closer you come to it until you reach a point that after it return becomes impossible (the event horizon for a black hole, the 5th layer for the abyss). And like a black hole, time exponentially slows down (relative to the outside) the closer you get to its ''core''. But unlike a black hole the abyss doesn't affect mass (or at least not as much) , it affects ''consciousness'' (just look at Nanachi's explanation, or even how the curse affects people), I would even say that it affects specificaly human conciusness (as so far only humans, or former humans like Nanachi and Bondrew seem to be affected by it, while Reg and the creatures that live in the abyss are not) (althought both the ''blessed'' former humans and the animals are able see its force field, only the latter seem to be imune to it)
Throughout the Made in Abyss story we can see some evidence that the abyss was formed in some sort of cataclysmic event (the praying skeletons, the boats stuck to its walls, and so on) which could or not be linked to its 2000 year cycle. I like the theory which states that the abyss gains a new layer at each cycle, becoming deeper each time, however, we cannot discard other options like:
2-or even that the abyss always existed and it was the golden city which was constructed later (which I find less likely, by looking at the current state of this so called ''city'', and to why didn't they construct in the surface in the first place?!)
2- the fact that Reg made a literal grave for her in the 4th layer (he was carrying her weapon when he met Faputa, he had flashbacks of the grave both times that he entered a field of flower) and buried with it some of, one would assume, her most precious belongings aka her weapon, her diary and her whistle (which makes even less sense she would leave it behind now that we know about its nature, as it serves no porpuse to Riko (at least until now), and only Lyza can use it, also the person ''inside'' the whistle must've been someone very close to her, why would she send it with Reg?)
We hope with the leadership of the subreddit involved in its creation and administration that we will be able to ensure a friendly, welcoming environment that the community rightly deserves. We acknowledge the previously established community on the old server still exists and wish them the best. We want all participants in any Made In Abyss community to discuss and hang out with any persons or groups of their choosing. At the end of the day we want to provide an avenue for further discussion and interaction with fellow fans without fear of sending them into harms way.
While most of the community is unaware of the old server and/or hasn't heard the news, we know that some of you are curious and you can find a more lengthy response as to why we made our decision here.
What do you guys personally think is at the bottom of the abyss? What do you think or want to happen at the very end? Do you think the ending will be happy, sad, or bittersweet? Or maybe something else?
Reg's body is said to be an amalgamation of relics (for example, the incinerator is a similar relic to Sparagmos) and he himself an "Aubade," that is, a "supreme treasure of the abyss" that high-level raiders (like Habo, Bondrewd, and Ozen) in the organization are aware exist but are never made known to the general public.
"Interference Units" exist; these are robots design to learn about the different layers of the abyss. It seems that they bear some similarities to Reg. Garbarune is an example of an interference unit.
TL;DR: In my opinion, I think it'll eventually be discovered that there are ancient people in the abyss that created the interference units and Reg and that Reg is a special interference unit designed to travel the abyss quickly and be piloted by a human soul. When Lyza met Reg, the soul inside Reg demonstrated this to Lyza by letting her possess Reg's body. Lyza and Reg bonded, and Lyza tasked Reg with helping Riko travel the abyss. The soul in Reg's body is likely the soul of a person who is has had their body destroyed in some way; it's unlikely Reg will ever become a "real boy" in the future, though not impossible. If it does turn out to be the case that Reg's soul can return to his human body, perhaps Riko and Reg can actually grow up together. I think I'd be pretty content with that if that's how the story ends, though who knows.
