Hello,

I'm pleased to announce that yesterday in Las Vegas, the RadioVIS Technical Specification V1.1 was ratified by the RadioDNS Steering Board. This now makes it the official RadioVIS specification - if you haven't already, go and have a look at http://www.radiodns.org/documentation.

I know this will make you all rush out and implement the new functionality - especially the improved HTTP transport and the Image Sizings. The feeling I get from talking to people is that Broadcasters and Manufacturers alike are becoming more confident in pushing the technology further and doing more imaginative things, which I'm hoping we'll be able to see over the next 12 months.

In other news, I will be standing down as the Lead for the RadioVIS Application Team. I've been fortunate enough to have this role since the inception of the project (ever since I was asked to quickly design a protocol for pushing text and images to devices), but I now think it is time for someone else to step in. As some of you may know, I have been caretaking the RadioEPG project over the last few months - a role which I will now be taking up in a formal capacity as the RadioEPG Lead.

There are still a lot of opportunities within the RadioVIS world, and so I would ask anyone who is interested in taking on the position of RadioVIS Lead to please make themselves known to me. I would suggest the most appropriate thing to do would be to draw up a list of candidates from with the Application Team - and perhaps take a vote should there be more than one person (I'm hoping that will be the case).

Its a great opportunity for someone to help set the future vision of the project and, like RadioDNS itself, providing a bridge between the Broadcast and IP domains.

Hi,

I would be interested in standing for the role of Lead for the RadioVIS Application Team.

I have been involved in RadioVIS (and RadioDNS more generally) for about 18 months, initially  implementing support for RadioVIS on Frontier Silicon platforms and also contributing to the RadioVIS 1.1 specification.   I am also an active member of the RadioTAG application team and worked on the current  RadioTAG draft specification and on implementing RadioTAG  on Frontier Silicon’s colour touchscreen hybrid radio platform.

I believe that this experience has given me some insight into the RadioVIS technology and ecosystem, which I would be able to build upon to lead RadioVIS development further.  My employer (Frontier Silicon) is committed to hybrid radio and to RadioDNS and is represented on the RadioDNS Steering Board.  This will enable me to devote the time required to fulfil this role; as well as actively supporting future development of RadioVIS based applications.

There are several areas in which I can see future development of RadioVIS can taking place, including extensions for interactive slide support and personalisation of content.  In particular, I am keen to develop the prototype of interactive slides using RadioVIS that I demonstrated at the RadioDNS hack day in February.  I would also be very interested in feedback on other directions in which RadioVIS could be taken further.

I hope that people would feel able to support me in this.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Robin

Many thanks for your interest Robin, it is certainly heartening to see device manufacturers becoming more involved in the teams.

I would encourage the rest of the group to consider whether they would also like to put their ideas forward in this way. The role, as I have performed it, has been more of a guiding hand to the rest of the team, although there is no obligation to run it in exactly the same way.

In terms of the process of selecting a new team lead, I am going to be keeping this open for a time period sufficient to gather as many candidates as possible.

The group will need to make a recommendation to the Steering Board, for them to consider at their next meeting on 10th July. I shall be staying in the role until this point, and anticipate forwarding to them our recommendation before this meeting. I think the actual process is very much to be defined, but they may wish to speak with the nominated candidate at the meeting.

Hello,

This is just a reminder that the next Steering Board meeting is on 10th July.

As Ben has decided to stand down as Team Leader for RadioVIS, we would like this group's recommendation for a new Team Leader, so we can ratify that at the Steering Board. You can post replies here, or you can contact me directly.

Please could I ask for that recommendation by 29th June 2012.

Thanks,

Nick
