From this week's show: Seashore inspiration and idealism was a loose
theme in indie segment #1..with songs from Johnny J. Blair, Lily
Wilson & Justin Edge providing good evidence thereof. I debuted the
newest CD from Monsters Are Not Myths, and reintroduced music from
Janus and Pretendo.
My favorite segue was The Bobs into The Sweetback Sisters, talking
about food. Joe Iadanza's tune "The Barn", would have made a great 3-
song segue but ended up airing at a different point. Final segment
was full of dark, quiet, protest songs, notably Mark Erelli's
"Volunteers". David Leinweber's new project "Silverbird" debuted
within the rotation.
I've not focused much abut doing holiday music this year, but it's
been a good tradition for the final Sunday in October, and I have the
means, and the music, so there will be a good collection of such music
heard on Sunday. Looking forward to sharing this with you along with
the usual segments. I actually forgot to solicit you folks for song
ideas this year. I guess I can get a head start for Xmas/New Year's
then.
CMJ has one day left, today (Saturday) and I'm already with the
blistered toes, the wrinkled face, the whole thing. But totally worth.
Securing a badge within NYC Gigs, the booking agency I work for, I was
able this year to get to a lot of venues and see a lot of bands you
had only read about because I gave them airplay...others I haven't
seen in a while. And, there were some of the usual surprises.
Tuesday I saw these: Amy Kuney, Taylor Barton with G.E. Smith, Brother
Joscephus & The Love Revival Revolution Orchestra (a band larger than
their name), Western Civ (hello, Misty Dawn), Stand, Cruel Black Dove
(tho I really wanted to see Dead Leaf Echo there at Fontana's),
Jupiter One, The Octagon (hello, Travis Harrison!), Heavy Trash (Jon
Spencer and band). A most interesting evening, and a busy one, getting
to 9 venues in Manhattan. Very excited about Cruel Black Dove and
their sweet, sexy groove.
Wednesday: Mutlu (from Philly!), Chris Barron with band, Evan Dando
(solo), Miz Metro. Yeah, a light night..I had to be part of a film in
Times Square earlier in the day...was quite tired by this point. Evan
was tremendous playing a bunch of short songs..a voice that has
deepened over the years. Piano's where he played, was the one venue
that there was any trouble getting into...and it was merely a capacity
issue. Otherwise, smooth sailing. Drom had some technical issues and
their headliner cancelled.
Thursday: Exhausted from the shooting, I already had a job interview
in the Philly metro area to get to....and then headed back to the city
for these: Josh Charles, NLX, Amber Rubarth, Lowry, ......and then
took the time to head to Jersey and to Maxwell's to see The Bongoes'
second of two sets. Tremendous show by the rock veterans. Good mixed
crowd too..but I was probably one of a few with the magic CMJ badge.
After going through a series of subway changes after midnight, I
called it a night at 1am. If it weren't for that, I'd be seeing Reid
Paley Trio.
Friday: Well I really wanted to stay in Brookyn but I called an
audible on myself and scattered about in the rain. I saw Holly
Miranda, Starcode, and then...finally to the home borough and an
exciting....dare I say historic?..night at Southpaw...with the sounds
of The Neanderthals, along with The Trashmen, making their first NYC
appearance. Got a few (yes, few) videos of the latter and plenty of
pics of both. Also got a vinyl EP celebrating the Trashmen's
appearance.
So far I've experienced music at 18 venues across 3 counties.
Saturday looks like very heavy stuff weatherwise, so I'm not at all
sure what I will see but may keep things pretty light.
Must....heal...blisters....
Lots of photos to share, but will save them for Monday.
Being that my schedule and energy have been in such flux, I've not
taken time to figure who to give airplay for Sunday..therefore my
airplay alerts to artists will not be delivered today. I regret this
because I usually send these out on Fridays to appropriate artists
receiving airplay for the following show. Next time this should be on
time.
Something I want to share here from a repost on Facebook. Facebook and
Google aligning with streaming music services to provide shopping
alternatives on both sites for music within their search engines. This
does not necessarily mean royalties are part of the equation. More:

VIDEO:
I have video of a few songs; these will be added on Monday 11/2 as
well. I meant to create another Kerouac sketch or two this past
week..but might wait for the following week. Keep watch at my YouTube
channel for updates.

FIELD RECORDINGS:
For a very reasonable fee I am now doing audio recordings at live
events without the confinement of a sound board. I'm open to working
in NYC and nearby cities. Please contact me if you have interest. It's
been a while since I have done this work. Remember, all approved audio
gets airplay here!
