PiHPSDR and CW issues

I have the special version of dl1ycf for pihpsdr, I can get the CW to kind of work with the radioberry if I compile with GPIO=ON, but majy say you do not need to do that with radioberry. But so I am a bit confused on what is the correct setup. I Also have a preamp board which has the paddle input wired to the CN301 to allow CE paddles. It works with the paddles but is very erraic, mpossble to send messages properly with the paddles.

So what is the correct way to setup pihpsdr, with our with GPIO and how to configure everything properly to get CW to be usable. So much different imformation out there. Can someone chime in and give me some guidance on how to set this up with Pi4B, Radioberry and Preamp paddle connections. Thanks for any help
