We have been having a conversation about KHT in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I remember I was told that KHT was a limited coast station. The reason for their being was to keep the Collins gear operational for the USAF SAC base. I don’t know where the SAC base was located. KHT had 5 LPA’s on 50 foot towers in New Port Beach, CA. They could remote the New Port Beach LP’s when needed from Cedar Rapids. These were the same LPA’s we had on the Glomar Explorer and it was said they cost $12K then. Do you or Jerry have any idea Doug?

Well in the US there was (and still is) a SAC base in Northern La. (Alexandria area). 

I've driven by there a few times on I-20 and watched several B-52s doing touch-and-goes.

Collins Radio, later Rockwell Collins, in Richardson TX sported at least one large LP in their antenna field as did Texas Instruments not too far away that they used for HF comms with their far flung Geophysical Services fleet of oceanographic vessels. I was working there as an ET at the time when a radio operator job was posted. I was tempted, but turned it down mostly because it was non-CW.

That is interesting Joel – I know there are several fellows who worked for Scripts in San Diego that later came to work for Exxon.  I think those company’s gave the upcoming RO a shot at sailing merchant ships. On the Glomar Explorer a fellow came from Collins and showed us how to set up the big Collins transmitter. His name was Earl Hawkins, you might have known him.
