Your Invitation To Our
Bonus Living History Interview
An Afternoon With Russell Johnson
This Saturday June 21st
You Are Invited
To Radio Central, 2152 Central Ave. Alameda
Saturday, June 21 at 2:30 pm
to hear about how radio inspired former San Francisco broadcaster Russ Johnson to pursue a life of traveling and recording his adventures. Space is filling up. Reserve your place now!How Radio Inspired My Wanderlust -
Join me as I tell stories about how listening to the squeals of distant radio signals and talking to the world as a 13 year old ham radio operator inspired 25 years as radio and TV broadcaster, includiing KRON and KABL, and a second career, traveling the world as a filmmaker, writer and photographer. I'll be playing audio and video reliving both worlds, including the wacky world of an all night DJ, groupies and all, covering a coup d'etat in Fiji for NPR, joining the Royal Family of Ubud, Bali for the wedding of a prince, and nerding out with Arthur C. Clarke in Sri Lanka as he redesigns the surface of Mars.
Look forward to meeting you.

CHRS Broadcasting Camp Report
By Kim BrickmanOur inaugural Summer Camp is underway all this week at Radio Central.
The Broadcasting and Podcasting - focused curriculum, has over 20 'campers' between 6th and 10th grades from the east bay. All of them curious, engaged and enthusiastic to learn from our subject matter experts such as Jeanne Marie Acceturo, Instructor/teacher of the El Cerrito High School Broadcasting Class who graciously stepped up, literally at the last minute after the original Camp Instructor had to bow out due to an unforseen family emergency. Jeanne, who along with her high school classes has been to CHRS many times has brought a level of professionalism and currency to our charges this week. Rachel Lee and Partnership/Donor Consultant, Michael Toedman are to be commended and congratulated for their pioneering efforts for what will be the first of many Student Camps at Radio Central. Also assisting our campers were Brian Cooley, Scott Piehler, Ash Kumra, Sam Van Zandt, Gerry Dove, Alisa Clancy & Rosie Allen.

Greetings, this Juneteenth:
Last Saturday saw many visitors to CHRS directly as a result of the nearby "No Kings" protest at Alameda City Hall (over 3,000 in attendance including several CHRS members along with my wife, Wendy!). As the congregation dispersed many came past Radio Central and stopped in. As I've been saying, many visitors were first-timers and Alameda residents; thus, making local community outreach a vital part of what we do (ie: Rachel and yours truly).
Also, one of our guests who hails from Phoenix, AZ clarified some background on our former 1000-watt AM broadcast transmitter in our functional, 1958-era radio broadcast studio. Once belonging to KRUX, this was a former top-40 station located in Phoenix! As is said, you're never too old to learn something new everyday...
This Saturday, June 21st at @ 2:30 p.m., Russ Johnson will be speaking at Radio Central about his many travels around the globe as a result of his childhood love for shortwave and amateur radio. Come by to listen and be enthralled by Russ' wanderlust. Also, just after Russ, we're expecting several members of the Bay Area Travel Writers Association who will get a tour and familiarization of CHRS which will put us in good stead for upcoming articles on 'what to see and where' referring to Radio Central in Alameda.
Pssst: Don't forget, CHRS is again participating in this year's Mayor's Annual 4th of July Parade here in Alameda. As last year was our first time (what a successful event it was!), we fully expect 2025 will be even bigger and better. Details certainly will follow. But, do let me know of your interest participating in what is the longest Parade route (3.3 miles) in the nation, for a celebration of this size!
Please join me in welcoming and welcoming back the following CHRS members:
Freeman Wong - Sacramento, CA
Rick Sadle/KSAN-FM - Portland, OR
Until next week, stay connected!
