Almost all cargo ships, which carry over 80% of the world's goods and are at sea for days or weeks before reaching a port, do not have medical or paramedical personnel. Although the captain is also responsible for providing the necessary assistance in the event of illness or injury on board, his extremely limited medical knowledge does not allow him to deal with pathologies or physical damage on his own. To overcome this limitation, specialized centers have been developed in which doctors, through telecommunication systems, guide the ship's captain in providing the necessary medical assistance to those who are ill on board. The most famous of these centers and with the largest number of patients assisted in the world is the Centro Internazionale Radio Medico (CIRM), which from its headquarters in Rome provides free medical assistance to sailors of all nationalities and in all the seas of the world.
