My dear friend Bob Shrader, W6BNB would have been delighted at your choice of study manuals. "Electronic Communications" was the only book that contained all the materials for commercial radiotelephone, radiotelegraph and amateur radio examinations. Bob taught at the college level by permission of the California Board of Education. http://sideswipernet.org/keys/w6bnb-keys.php He was a master of the sideswiper, semiautomatic, and straight keys. The photo below was taking (amazingly) one day before his death at 98 years. Click on the link to our page on the Sideswiper Net honoring him (he founded the net. He bought his Vibroplex north of Courtland Street in Radio Row, New York, NY. He was a radio officer for His son, Doug now holds his call.

David,

Sorry to hear about Bob Shrader's passing.

In my opinion, "Electronic  Communications" was the finest book of it's type ever written. I carried it with me from my first days at sea and throughout my seagoing career. It saved my bacon on more than one occasion. (It even listed shore station working frequiences as I recall.

I took one of Bob's FCC exam prep courses (First Class Radiotelephone I think) and hosted him for dinner when he was in the D.C. area.

His was a major contribution to our profession, a gentleman, and he will be missed.

He was a great fellow. Lived until 98 years old.

You should write up some history and send it to the mail list.

I attended Announcers Training Studios in NYC, I went for the 1st class FCC Radiotelephone license course, the only two books we used were Shraders Q&A  and Kaufman Radio Telephone License Q&A, plus we had an excellent instructor.

John Schalestock and others.

You've got some stories to tell, at least.

Maybe you haven't been prowling the Internet looking for recordings and stories, but you can contribute SOMETHING at least.

This isn't supposed to be a one man show.

I have one - and just one - thank God - subscriber who frequently writes asking questions to me personally - not this email list of 600 former and current radio officers, and not the related Facebook Radio-Officers group of over 5,000 members and gets irritated if I don't answer his direct to me email. I've asked him in the past, if he'd become a moderator or administrator of one of these responsibilities, but he politely declines.

These lists don't become worthwhile all on their own.

Each of you could research something you are interested in that's broadly under the banner of radio.

You could take a day, a week,  or even a year to work at it, and submit it for discussion.

I don't mind doing the work, these things interest me. but iti should NOT be a one man effort.

My fond memory of W6BNB includes working him on the air.  He'd rack along at a reasonable commercial speed, then "throw the weight away" as I used to say.  It was then up to you to copy or humble yourself with a QRS.

Bob honored us with a visit to KPH. during which he spun some fine radio tales.  Many of us have signed copies of Electronic Communications.  Here are some photos of that visit.

Here's Bob at KPH Position 6 pounding brass with a Blue Racer.  To his left is the Bunnell sideswiper he used to demonstrate the correct technique for using that key.  I make a video of that demonstration but it's too large to post here via email.

Fond memories of a great man.
