Permanent Volunteers Needed

I need two permanent volunteers to manage this CW email list.

Preparation for possible health related issues.

If I can continue, I will. If not, you will.

Two volunteers are needed as soon as possible, if not immediately.

Hello David,

Got your message about volunteers.  I wish I could help, but like I said before I am banned from Google and Facebook forever.  If I could help, I would.

I hope that all is well with you and that you are feeling good.

We are all getting old.  I find that as time goes by I feel like a relic of a long lost era.  Sometimes I wonder why fate keeps me alive.  I've never really been happy since the demise of our esteemed profession.  I look around at the world we are in now and I just don't understand it.  I see nothing here for me anymore.  I am just not interested and sometimes disgusted by what I see.

I have fond memories though.  Of working 4 stories underground at the Navy intercept station in Edzell, Scotland.  (The facility was dismantled 30 years ago.)  Of WNU, WLO, and some of the better ships I liked.  There was nothing like it.  Remember when we had a QSO on MF off the coast of Japan in 1989?  I was on the M/V Marine Reliance/WHEJ.  Also working in the old Telford Hotel at the i.e. America Radio Network and the General Manager Cliff Curley, now deceased.  Chuck Harder got the Telford Hotel back in 2001.  He died around 2018 in a nursing home.  The Telford is abandoned and up for sale.

The other day I looked up the old broadcast station where I worked on-air back in the 1998.  It was WROD radio, an adult standards station in Daytona Beach, at 103 Wilder Blvd.  It went on the air in 1948 and was one of the first radio stations in Daytona Beach.  1,000 watts during the day, lower power at night.  It was an ANALOG station for the most part with an old audio board and 12 reel to reel 1/4 inch tape decks with music on tape, lots of vinyl (including some 78's)  and two old turntables.  Also a three-stack cart machine.  Similar equipment in the production room.  All the guys I worked with at WROD are gone.

The station moved about 2005, and changed to a "Classic Rock" format shortly thereafter.  They had to; It's listenership was simply dying out.  The building was torn down about 2010 or so, and they took "the big stick"  (vertical antenna) that was in the marsh along the Halifax River down as well.  I remember we carried "The Bill Miller Show" and "Canada Calling,"  a show for vacationing Canadians in the U.S.  We also ran the "Harmony" show, which was hosted by Al Alberts, formerly of the group "The Four Aces."

WROD is now an FM only conservate talk station, with an FM translator running a measly 180 watts.  It's range is ten miles... what's the point?  It's AM at 1,340 kc/s (Class C "local" channel) has been silent for years.  I drove out to Daytona Beach to see the old WROD site recently, and it just caused me heartache.  The world I knew is gone.

People receive broadcasts of music etc. in their cars/homes by other means now.  An entire career field, that was interesting and FUN, has disappeared almost completely.  Just like we disappeared from ships.  All those interesting, unique personalities gone.

You are right to seek assistance with the list. No one lives forever but it is my sincere hope that the radio officers group is still "on the air" and accessible 100 years from now.  Even if no one has any idea what it all means.

I have been thinking of all this a lot lately.  My life is a lonely life.  I live alone.  All my friends nearby are dead.  I have no family left.   I work part-time to get by, at an age where I should not be working at all.  I collect a Social Security pension (a measly sum, hardly pays my rent.)  I rarely leave my small apartment anymore.  It is a sad and miserable existence.   I am in failing health here, and I must admit that sometimes I go to bed at night and sincerely hope I do not wake up.  There is nothing left for me here.  I never got married, never had any children.

RM
