John George Phillips was a British sailor and the senior wireless operator aboard the Titanic during its ill-fated maiden voyage in April 1912. On the final evening, Phillips had been exceptionally busy clearing a backlog of messages caused by a wireless breakdown. His consequent failure to respond to incoming signals was cited as a principal cause of the disaster. Phillips did his utmost to contact other ships for assistance. He died in the sinking.

Harold Sydney Bride (11 January 1890 – 29 April 1956) was the junior wireless officer.

After the Titanic struck an iceberg at 11:40 pm 14 April 1912, Bride and his senior colleague Jack Phillips were responsible for relaying CQD messages (later SOS at Captain Edward Smith's urging) to ships in the vicinity, which led to the survivors being picked up by the RMS Carpathia.

The men remained at their posts until the ship's power was almost completely out. Bride was washed off the ship as the boat deck flooded, but managed to scramble onto the upturned lifeboat Collapsible 'B', and was rescued by the Carpathia later in the morning. Despite being injured, he helped Harold Cottam, the Carpathia's wireless operator and a personal friend of his, transmit survivor lists and personal messages from the ship.

It was not until 1954 that Phillip sand Bride were totally exonerated from any failings of communication. As a result of that exoneration the PMG Certificate awarded to Radio Officers was crowned with the Royal Coat of Arms.

Hello David

What is the source for the claim re the certificate and the R/Os being “cleared”?

Cleared by whom?  I don’t recall any enquiries in 54 re the Titanic.

I’ve seen certs issued before 1954 that also had the coast of arms…the coat of arms seems a generic thing – on all UK certs..

I wondered about and that and the claim that Phillips and Bride were cleared.  I never thought there was suspicion of their actions.

I don't know where I got that, I tried searching but nothing found.

I did like the pictures.

The Royal Crest is as used by UK Government departments, the General Post Office (GPO), issuers of the PMG, being such a department.  PMG was the Post Master General which was a political appointment.

Glenn,

I found where I had gotten the post, and I had already put it at the bottom on my post, put when I looked to see where I had found the post, I didn't see it either.

The fellow who posted it got called out on that error, and there's quite a bit of good natured fun, like remembering people's comments about how "radio officers" were the only officers on the ship!

The man that posted it was much more familiar with U.K. things than me, and he also was fooled by the error

Also for me and it took the sting out of being so foolishly wrong! I should have realized that being in the field even if in the former British North America colonies that I would have heard something about this before.

Now I've been told I was the only "officer" onboard. Well until they showed us the gangway the Day the Morse Music died.
