Regret Knut Haugland died.  I remember when Thor Heyerdahl and his crew in his 1947 expedition crossed  the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands. In Brazil many newspapers and magazines informed since the expedition departed from Peru and arived at the Tuamotu Islands. I have the book Kon-Tik, writed by Thor Heyerdahl.This book became a bestseller.

The only Viking ships in existence are at the museum in Oslo???

I thought I remember seeing one in the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven.

It was a Viking ship that was thought to be built around the year 800. It apparently sank in the mouth of the Weser river, was preserved in the mud, discovered, raised and kept in the museum. They keep it covered under a constant fog/mist spray. Apparently the wood would disintegrate if it totally dried out.

Of course, there are also reproductions. One such reproduction of a Viking ship crossed the Atlantic on its own about 4 years ago and went on tour of various USA and Canadian ports. I went on board it here in New Haven.
The living conditions were rather tough on the modern crew members.
