AM Radio Targeted? Medium Wave frequencies have longer distance coverage than FM (VHF). Also we Merchant Mariners can receive them up to 1000 miles away at sea during daylight. KEEP AM RADIO!

Apparently the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers claim it's too expensive to filter out the interference to MW AM car radios that these EVs create, so they began eliminating the radios. But in the US, our nation-wide Emergency Alert System (EAS) uses MW AM as its network backbone, and an estimated 70% of Americans still listen to MW AM stations, especially while they're driving, for news, traffic, and weather.

Hence, Congress passed a bill titled "AM Radio for every Car Act," to keep those radios in new vehicles.

Now some will say that MW AM radio is no longer needed due to almost everyone having a cellular telephone. But consider this: Just one clear-channel MW AM radio station in Los Angeles will have a daytime coverage of about 50,000 square miles reaching a population of about 23 million residents. Think of how many UHF cellular towers it would take, along with the complexity of that system, to reach those numbers.

I agree that medium wave radio is the way to go.

I didn't know about the problem with electrical vehicles being noisy on the radio bands.

I'm with you, clean up the electric vehicles and let them receive medium wave broadcasts without interference.

AM radio is a dying market. The only reason most AM stations are on the air is because they are allowed to run FM repeaters.

The EV manufacturers claim in will cost $70 a car to install shielding to prevent AM band RFI.

I heard an interview for the new FCC Commissioner. He is a big proponent of satellite communications. Also the new "first buddy" Musk is looking for government money for his StarLink system. I doubt there is any interest in the administration to force AM in the cars.

I do miss listening to the shortwave broadcasts.

An amusing AP article, the BBC must be pretty lame they don’t pay the Associated Press for news :-)

Tell that to the powers that be.

There a Biden program to deploy rural internet and the system is based on fiber optic networks. One of the reasons Musk went to way he did is that he is trying to get satellite contracts for this rural network even though fiber is more robust and has higher throughput. The Chinese have built a fiber network to supplement their BeiDou satellite system.

I have been following resiliency plans for the GPS system. Most proposals involve other satellite systems. The television broadcasters are deploying the latest digital standard, ATS3, and they are proposing using this as a timing backup.

Let's see what happens...
