Coast Station Recordings

Maybe you're one of those who remember. Late on a winer night night... tubes glowing in the darkened radio shack... earphones on... And one after another they rolled in, the great coast stations of the world. Maybe you listened to improve your code speed. Or maybe you listened for the thrill of it. Once the marine bands were filled end to end with the signals of coast stations from around the world. Twenty four hours a day the skilled operators at these stations carried the messages of maritime commerce. And they were there to lend immediate assistance to mariners in peril at sea. We thought it would never end. But the golden age of Morse code marine communications has passed and now the marine bands are either silent or occupied by digital transmissions. Luckily, recordings of many of that golden age exist. Listen to them here and travel back in time, a time not so long ago, when Morse was king.

A very good information and excellent article/collection. A beautiful sweet memory indeed. So far, all of your informations/Articles appear to be very useful and informative. Unfortunately, again I say everything is not for everyone in this world. Equally Morse and music also cannot be played by anyone. So human civilization just have tried to find some
Other way and spending tons of money to remove Morse.
You can say this is a wrong ego only. Subsequently they are also failing miserably. One after another ammendment is being introduced  in SOLAS regarding communication equipments/systems in the name of safety but alas they haven't come to a satisfactory conclusion till date.
Let us see what happens. Regards.

RC,

That's nothing, listen to this:

You will have to fast forward it because it includes a long WLO transmission but afterwards it has KLC and WNU.

Browse around here also.

The entry for Maritimemorsememories has lots of recordings.

Shirl Prewitt sent me this awesome recording

Not just the coast stations, but the ship calling bands, too. At NMO we had a bank of Collins 651-S1 receivers that were programmed to scan the 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 22, and 26 MHz maritime calling bands. These frequencies were normally jammed up with ships calling coast stations, but during the OBS hours it was bedlam

I sure miss it!
