Hello Everyone,

I have spent the last two months researching  post WWII  communications gear manufactured by (or for) Marconi Marine International. The results can be seen at :  http://jproc.ca/britishmarconi/index.html

As you can well appreciate, the information gathered was scattered all over the web and in manuals. It was my intention to capture all the pertinent material and post in one place. Now I’m in need of some assistance since I was not able to find specs and photos for every piece of equipment.  However, the equipment I located (both vacuum tube and solid state) should  be representative of the company’s products from this era .

In the Equipment document, I have identified the gear  for which I am missing specs or a photo or both.

For classifying equipment as to vacuum tube, or solid state, I used the following rule. If a design uses even one vacuum tube ( or any hybrid design) it was listed in the vacuum tube section. Let me know if any device has been incorrectly  classified or if I missed any device which should be listed.

My appreciation goes out to list members Sandy Blaize and Spud Roscoe  who assisted me with some of the equipment identification.

Regards,
Jerry Proc VE3FAB

Hi Jerry,

Good work on the website. Just a couple of things - You have the Globespan Tx listed in a 1950's ships installation but the Globespan didn't appear until around late 1960's or 1970 as far as I can remember. Oceanspan was the only option until then. The Atalanta appeared in 1960.

The Reliance emerg Tx was definitely Reliance and not Reliant.

Hi Peter, Jerry & All:

That picture Jerry has "From Semaphore to Satellite" is on page 142 but has no caption.

The following - year built:
TUPPER/CGCV 1959
SIR WILLIAM ALEXANDER/CGGF 1959
HUDSON/CGDG 1963
DAWSON/CGBV 1967
JOHN A MACDONALD/CGBK 1960
LABRADOR/CGGM 1958
JOHN CABOT/CGDJ 1964
IRVING OURS POLAIRE/CYML 1963
The H1060 and H1070 had Globespan and Atlanta installations can anyone remember the date they left their builders yard??

Enough

Heck some are newer than I realized. I thought they all entered service in the late 1950's. Anyway, I disagree on your dates Peter. All of the above were fitted with Globespan's and two Atalanta's when they left their builders yard. So they must have been available in the late 1950's.

Hello Peter,

In the British merchantman photo, the labeling was provided by someone else.

The Globespan transmitter is identified correctly but reference to the 1950’s era is wrong.

The book “From  SEMAPHORE TO SATELLITE ITU”  covers the period 1865-1965.

Would presume that the book was written in the mid to late 1960’s so I’m using that era for the photo caption.

I did get the Reliant/Reliance thing sorted out but forgot to change the link.

Thank you for catching these errors.

Google produced this:

H-1060
Ex - M.J. BOYLEN
call sign VCJQ
owners - Irving Oil Co, speed 15.5
built 1964 at St John SB & DD, St John
loa 690.44

H1070
VCKW call signals
owners - Bays Waters Co Ltd
15.5 speed
built 1966 St John SS& DD Ltd, St John

They tried to get me to join the H1070 a few weeks after we got burned out of the old Ivrvingstream/CYNJ, I can still remember the gent from Kentlines.. "We will put you onboard one of our good ships"  Hi...

I left St John NB as quick as possible, their ships in that time 1971 were run very loosely, I think that could have been related to the fire which killed 6 crew, but you know that old story,  in New Brunswick you don't fight "city" hall.

Thanks - my brain is shot I felt they were older.

Gypsum changed the four from Panama to British in December 1961 and replaced the RCA stations with the Globespan and single Atalanta right after that. So I believe late 1950's.

Hello Everyone,

In compiling the equipment, there was one thing I ran into. Of the few pieces of equipment that had manuals, Marconi Marine went out of their way to ensure that *no*  dates appear anywhere – not even on schematics.  As a result, one of the objectives (dating) for the web page could not be met in its entirely.

If I can locate someone with a copy of  Fred Osterman’s book   “Shortwave Receivers Past & Present”  that ought to provide a date as to when the Atalanta was introduced. And that will define the era of the photo.

I have this book!!!!

It should be on a shelf out in my hamshack unless I relocated it some where!

Will look for it tonight and let you know when I have my hands on it.  Compile a list of what you want “date” wise and I’ll see what is in Fred’s book.

Jerrz,

The Ostermann book puts 1958 to 1967 as the Atalanta manufacturing period.

Your new research on the British Marconi is great!

Spud,

You could be right. Now I recall the Empress of Canada GHLA had a Globespan and I joined that in 1964/5. She was built in 1961. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Empress_of_Canada_(1961)

Found the book!

Marconi Mercury type 1017  and Electra type 1018: 1953-1965
Marconi Atalanta type 2207C: 1958-1967
Marconi Apollo (type no. not listed): 1970-1982
Marconi Monitor: 1966-1969
Marconi Nebula (Actually made by Eddystone-private branded): 1962-1974
There was two newer receivers that I studied in Chelmsford, Essex, England during a seminar/school these were:
Marconi Atlantic
Marconi Pacific
Both similar in appearance to the Nebula and also made by Eddystone, private branded Marconi Marine.

There was also variations of the Nebula that used a digital readout instead of a “projection dial” created by a disk with etched calibration projected on a ground glass screen. ( I never saw any of the newer “Marconi” Eddystones actually installed on ships, just at the seminar in England.)

Also some “Reserve” receivers all solid state, made by Eddystone private branded “Marconi” whose “names” and/or “type numbers” I cannot remember...sorry.

Hope this helps!

Sandy W5TVW

Jerry,

Re Challenger Tx, I got this email from a friend who used to own one:

Pretty sure the Challenger is 1500W RMS on HF. Not sure on MF.
It has 4x 4CX350F tubes for the finals.
