Below is a brief history since I became a radio officer:

Civil Aviation commenced in Sri Lanka (known as Ceylon ) in 1947. I was a radio technician then and got my Ceylon Postmaster’s Certificatein 1947 and joined Civil aviation in 1947 as an Air Traffic Controller in the Communications station, Colombo.

Air Ceylon commenced flying in the regional sector and I obtained Ceylon Flight Radio Officers License immediately and operated on DC3 passenger aircraft. My first International Flight was as a 2nd Flight Radio Officer on DC3 passenger charter flight to Sydney in May 1948, an epic flight from Colombo via, Calcutta, Rangoon, Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta, Timor, Darwin Sydney, with fueling stops. The only navigational aid was an ADF. The return flight was Sydney, Darwin, Bali, Singapore, Calcutta, Colombo. Back to regional flights.

In 1955 I joined KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and operated as a Flight Radio Officer on all their passenger and charter international flights flights all over the world. In about 1958 I passed an international Navigation course and started flying as NAVRO on transatlantic flights with primitive navigational aids. In 1961 Flight Radio Officers/Navigators/ Flight Engineers became redundant and I returned to Air Ceylon as 

Licensed aviation ground engineer.  

At the end of 1979 Air Ceylon went into liquidation and I had the opportunity of obtaining Shipping Radio Officers License and did five voyages between the Far East and Caribbean and South Africa and South America. Retired from Shipping in 1985. 

I was invited by the Civil Aviation Authority Sri Lanka on the 6th December 2024 and was awarded a gift titled, “Compliments from Civil Aviation Authority for Mr. Lionel Sirimanne, Meet the oldest living Aviator in Sri Lanka.” This occurred when celebrating the 80th Anniversary of International Civil Aviation Authority held in Sri Lanka.
