I have been corresponding with Joan Roscoe,  bereaved widow of Canadian Navy and Canadian Merchant Navy Radio Officer and noted historian, S. "Spud" G. Roscoe about his maritime book library.  I have also asked Canada's last radio officer, Paul Dunesnil (last ship "CNAV QUEST/CZDO" to assist.)

I'm looking into a Canadian concern that digitizes bound books, some quite fragile. I thought perhaps the CCGC might have this ability.

Do you have such facilities and would you participate in digitizing Mr. S. G. Roscoe's extensive Canadian Merchant Marine and Canadian Navy Radio History library?

Kind regards,

If you find it difficult to arrange for books to be scanned commercially as I have, I found that the cheapest way is to use a PLUSTEK OPTICBOOK 3600 scanner (now 3800L). It is like an ordinary A4 flat-bed scanner but one of the "long" sides is only 3mm from its edge and it is 10cm above the table top. It also automatically inverts alternate pages. Best to look at Plustek's website.  I have used it on several rare/delicate books with no damage.

If you want a good book scanner, I suggest the Cruz series of scanners.  It's basically a digital camera.  There is a foot switch and the software has AI to flatten curved surfaces like open books.  I have it and it works pretty well and much faster than any flatbed I've ever used.  It writes to pdf.

I understand, the short edge being 3mm from the edge of the scanner allows the binding, cover and other pages to hang down out of the way.

Thanks Doctor John!
