In response to D.R. red baiting that I was a communist not to be trusted. My FCC license along with my seamen papers 

had been confiscated and returned  when I asked 34 years later and then I received an interim security clearance when I 

volunteered to join the Cape Texas on a military mission. I ran for Congress in 2010 & 2012 as an independent 

Socialist, backed by no one, spending my own money in newspaper ads based on stopping outsourcing, including to 

Communist China and creating rust belts here. Includes rebuilding our Merchant Marine and mega Cruise Ships. On 

the 2nd run I got 16% of the vote. The ads weren't cheap and was funded by my ARA pension while still shipping. The 

4 attachments are samples, I paid  for more.

Good morning!  I thought I would chime in here.  My name is Brian Echols, son of Rae.  I may be able to shed a little light on doubts of my fathers pressure to pass 

all students.  The summer leading up to this, I was 12 years old.  I understand that most people would defend their father whether in the right or wrong.  What I can tell you is this:

I spent each summer day with my dad at work.  I'm sure many of the students will remember me being there.  I was mostly in my dads office studying for my Ham Radio License, which I passed that year (with code at age 12 (and later went on to get my GROL).  I would on occasion come out of the office, and mingle with the students during their lunch break and listen to them talk on the HF radio in the break room.  I was more of a fly on the wall, but very observant.  I heard many "behind the door" conversations, and even heated arguments. I paid attention and understood what was happening and being requested from my dad.

I can assure you this, the politics were real, and my father was forced out for failure to pass everyone.  My intent here is not to call anyone out, or shame- but to bring light on what unfortunately took place. I'm proud of my dad for standing his ground.  He was ALWAYS a very black and white person, and indeed a man of honor.

I have stories about ARA, but choose not to share them all, other than the fact that indeed it was asked of my dad to pass students through or leave.  W7FFF was very

proud to be part of the ARA, and absolutely crushed when he was forced out.  His work ethic and moral compass were solid, in spite of making his boss happy.

Thanks for sharing this and confirming what David and I know to be true.  Your dad was a good man and a good friend who help bring the ARA into the technical age.  His being forced out was a travesty of justice that angered many of us, and will NOT be forgotten by men of good will and integrity.

Very, important from Brian S. Echols the son of Rae Echols. I believe Brian is telling the whole truth 

via the half truths of DR & JS. BRIAN DOES NOT MENTION ANY NAMES OF THOSE HIS FATHER

WAS COMMANDED TO PASS THE MREO COURSE. What right does DR & JS to say I was one of 

them? I doubt Brian would even remember any names at that age that long ago. I wouldn't trust Mr.

walk down the gangway with his head high as far as I could throw a loaded shipping container. Don't

hide the fact that everyone was supposed to pass not just me. Stick to the truth if you want

credibility.

HOWEVER I do agree it is a terrible shame to have fired Ray Echols because he wouldn't pass

everyone who took the MREO test. Steinberg the Dictator is no doubt the guilty one because his

son has kept ARA running and I keep getting my fat monthly pension checks. 

I would also like to point out to DR who accused me of taking jobs away from more deserving

ARA members because I didn't deserve my MREO rating. While the American Merchant Marine

has shrunk terribly the ARA membership shrunk even more. Shipping was so excellent up to the

time I retired that at times a ARA ship went out without an ARA member because there was no one

around to take her. 3rd Mates have the papers to do the job.      

Last, if you want to stop this stupid feud than stop attacking me with stupid made up lies.

You are implying a lot here.  I remember the names very well. Not just the names, but faces too.  I made friendships with many.  I could  easily name every employee just in the Scottsdale, AZ ARA office from a picture, and many students.  Don’t doubt me.  I was gifted with an extremely great memory, and was involved more than one might think at that age, as I had goals to be a MREO. (Certainly glad I chose another career path now).

I absolutely do know and remember the name who he was commanded to pass. I’m trying not to throw anyone order the bus here, but just simply clear the air as to why my father left ARA.

Mr. Stanley, you are most certainly not making this easy. I did not want to single out your name.

You may be a fantastic MREO now, and should be proud of it. However, it is indeed fact, that at the time of testing- you would not have sufficient skills to diagnose a blown fuse on the radar equipment.  You may be a master now, with trial and error; but at the time of testing, I would see you as a huge liability. It’s not your fault, but obviously some poor management at ARA that linked you to the situation.

Again, I’m not looking to throw stones, or to hurt your name and reputation. I’m simply stating the truth of the reason to my father’s departure from ARA.

I wish you the best. It is important  for my family and myself to clear the air, from my unique circumstances- hearing many of these conversations first hand at the school.

I am amazed that you have such a fantastic memory at age 12, not just the names

but the faces so many years ago. At 97 I don't remember the year I became an MREO, 

can you tell me? Do you also remember John Schalestock being in the same class with 

me? You also know the details on how badly I failed that I didn't have sufficient skills to be 

able to diagnose a blown fuse on the Radar so you must have been a technician as well?

 Pardon me for being skeptical but can you show proof of being Rae Echols  son?

First off, the man's name is Brian, not Bruce. Brian Echols.
Secondly, no one except you doubts that he is who he says he is. I
don't, others may remember him from the ARA School.
Thirdly, you could have done your due diligence by checking the FCC
records on the chance the son of Rae Echols might have a radio
license.
And lastly - TRIM your messages so that the previous messages don't go
through the list again and again.

Don't insult Brian's integrity as you have insulted his father's
integrity and that of John Shalestock and Ken Welch and many others,
now and throughout the years.

My name is Brian Echols, not Bruce. Yes, I do have a great memory. I do not know John, and I do NOT remember ALL students. 

There is no need for you to get so defensive. You could say I was a technician.  My father taught me well enough to pass ham radio Novice and Technician and code at that age, as well as how to diagnose a blown fuse.

But since you asked, yes, I do remember the

conversations with your instructor, Cari and my father about progress and testing, among other conversations. 

Let me reiterate, I am not here to attack you. I don’t have any reason to. I  just stated reason as to my father’s departure, and unfortunately your name was caught up in the middle. The circumstances caused great stress to my father and lead him to an early death.

I took over my fathers call sign W7FFF when he passed. 

I’’m going it kindly stop replying to this thread.  I’ve said my part, and believe there is nothing else to be said; or even debate.

So Stanley,

Rae's son Brian remembers conversations with his father and Cari, your
instructor, and how his father was ordered to pass you even though you
had repeatedly failed the examination, even after Rae made one last
examination in RADAR by removing the fuse from the RADAR, and you
couldn't diagnose that problem. Rae told me he just threw up his
hands and said to me "I can't pass that guy as MREO, the fault was
simple enough for a novice radio officer - not yet a Radio Electronics
Officer (REO) much less than the top qualification of MREO.

Brian also says that this event produced great stress on Rae, because
he was threatened to either pass you or be fired. He reluctantly
passed you, you got your MREO, then Rae, being the principled man he
was - and his son and wife are - resigned.

In my opinion, Rae deserves a place in organized labor greatness, he
was Director of the ARA-TIMES School and he refused until being
threatened with termination to grant you MREO certification because
you simply were not qualified.

Think of all the qualified MREO's that this insulted - if you were not
qualified you should not have been issued certification, and Rae
Echols should not have been threatened to pass you when you never
successfully passed the required examinations.

A sad moment in ARA history. One that probably led to Rae's early death.
