Subject: Social Justice Math Teachers

Hi Becky,

I recently came across the Literacy for Social Justice Teacher group

web site and I wanted to write and see whether you know any

mathematics teachers who might be using social justice topics in their

classroom instruction.

I am a PhD student in Curriculum and Instruction (Math Education) at

the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and my dissertation research is

focused on understanding and supporting teachers who use social and

political problems in the context of their high school mathematics

classroom. Presently I am trying to find participants for my research.

I'm writing to see if you might be able to help me locate high school

math teachers who would be interested in participating in my

dissertation research. As I mentioned I am interested in teachers who

are more critical (in the sense of critical math pedagogy) with their

HS math instruction. For example, teachers who work with students to

mathematically investigate social problems such as poverty,

overpopulation, health issues, globalization, or other pressing

issues.

At this stage I am informally putting together a list of possible

participants and will conduct preliminary in-person interviews this

fall or early winter in 2010. My methods of data generation will

involve interviews, classroom observations, and potential co-teaching

(to be negotiated) over a 3 to 4 week period. Data collection could be

negotiated for almost any time during the 2009 and 2010 academic years

in order to accommodate the teacher's schedule. At this point,

geographic location isn't an issue.

The goal of my study is to understand the culture and ways high school

math teachers think about critical mathematics, curricular issues,

their related instruction, and develop strategies which can be put

into practice for teachers as professional development and changes to

existing math teacher education.

If you know of any high school, or possibly middle school, teachers I

might be able to contact, please get in touch with me or forward my

information to them. In the meantime, I'd be happy to answer any

questions or concerns you might have.

Thank you very much!

Michael Fish
