Climate Crisis and War – Two Sides of a Destructive System
Wars, violence, and suffering are escalating worldwide: from Palestine to Venezuela, from Sudan to Kurdistan, from Iran to the deadly Fortress Europe. At the same time, the German government is planning a massive expansion of gas-fired power plants and gas terminals. Instead of transforming society socially and ecologically, the government is accelerating dependence on climate-damaging gas and the complete orientation of society towards war. It is not alone in this; governments worldwide are arming fossil fuel infrastructure and their armies. These developments are interconnected. They are based on the same capitalist system of competition, destruction, and exploitation. Therefore, the struggles against them must also be waged jointly, which is why we at Ende Gelände and Rheinmetall Disarm are standing hand in hand against this destruction.
Gas is a climate killer and one of the most expensive forms of energy production. The government only uses taxpayer money to make electricity cheaper for industry. Thus, the gas industry itself, as well as energy-intensive industries like steel, chemicals, and the arms industry, profit from gas expansion.
At the same time, military and armament spending is gigantic and increasing as if there were no tomorrow. Arms companies are making billions in profits and have a vested interest in war. This rearmament is financed through social spending cuts: massive sums flow into the war machine and armaments instead of into social and climate policy measures. This means that the people who suffer most from wars and their consequences are supposed to finance this rearmament and these wars.
At the same time, military and armament spending is gigantic and continues to rise as if there were no tomorrow. Arms companies are making billions in profits and have a vested economic interest in war. Black people, Indigenous people, and communities in the Global South are the most affected. Gas extraction often poisons people and the environment, and it is usually these communities where gas or other fossil resources are extracted. Gas extraction for Germany poisons Black residents in the southern United States, often the descendants of enslaved people, and robs Indigenous groups in Vaca Muerta, Argentina, of their land. In Germany, it is precisely children from migrant and impoverished families who attend schools that, due to budget cuts, can offer fewer and fewer renovations and tutoring. These are exactly the people who are most targeted and endangered by the upcoming conscription.
We are horrified to see that rearmament and the abandonment of climate policy go hand in hand. Instead of a common climate policy, the focus is on isolationism and wars over resources. Wars destroy lives immediately, but also, in the long term, habitats by poisoning water, soil, and air. They destroy our very foundations for life.
In light of these life-threatening developments, one thing is clear to us: We reject this system. We will not support it, and certainly not die for it. We will not let a few fascist super-rich individuals fleece us, destroy the planet, and take our lives through war. Another world is possible. We want to decide for ourselves how we produce, consume, and distribute energy. We want a socio-ecological system change.
That's why, from May 28th to 30th, we will stand together against the expansion of gas infrastructure and the militarization of the Ruhr region. From September 1st to 6th, we will meet again at the "Disarm Rheinmetall" camp in Cologne. And in Hamburg, we will ensure that the NATO [summit in] Manöver scheduled for September 24th to 26th is canceled.

Damit ist sie nicht alleine, weltweit rüsten Regierungen fossile Infrastruktur und ihre Armeen auf. Diese Entwicklungen hängen zusammen. Das bedeutet: Die Menschen, die am Meisten unter Kriegen und deren Folgen leiden, sollen diese Aufrüstung und Kriege finanzieren.
Am meisten betroffen sind Schwarze, Indigene und Gemeinschaften im Globalen Süden. Die Gasförderung vergiftet oft Menschen und Umwelt und meist sind es diese Gemeinschaften, bei denen Gas oder andere fossile Ressourcen gefördert wird. Die Förderung von Gas für Deutschland vergiftetet im Süden der USA Schwarze Anwohner*innen, oft die Nachfahren von versklavten Menschen, und raubt z.B. indigenen Gruppen in Vaca Muerta (Argentinien) ihr Land. Vorwände unter denen die Regierung Projekte rechtfertigt, die zuvor undenkbar waren, drückt sie im Beschleunigungsmodus durch. Dabei wird das Sterben und Sterbenlassen von Menschen – im Krieg, Genozid, an Außengrenzen und an den Folgen der Klimakrise – immer weiter normalisiert. Doch wir wissen: Das System heißt Kapitalismus und es basiert auf Ausbeutung und produziert den Tod.
Jetzt durch den Brandbeschleuniger Gas auch noch die Klimakrise anzuheizen, schafft mehr Unsicherheit und Kriege. Kriege funktionieren nicht ohne Öl und Gas. Auch die Entwicklung von KI-Überwachungssystemen ist unfassbar energieaufwändig ,gefährdet unsere Privatsphären und untermauert neue Kriegslogiken. Die Produktion und der Export von Waffen befeuert Konflikte. Kriege zerstören unmittelbar Leben, aber auch langfristig Lebensräume durch das Vergiften von Gewässern, Böden und Luft. Sie zerstören unsere Grundlage zum Leben.
Angesichts dieser lebensfeindlichen Entwicklungen ist für uns klar: Wir verweigern uns diesem System. Wir werden es nicht stützen und erst recht nicht dafür sterben. Wir lassen uns nicht durch wenige faschistische Superreiche das Geld aus der Tasche ziehen, den Planeten zerstören und unsere Leben durch Kriege nehmen. Eine andere Welt ist möglich. Wir wollen selber darüber entscheiden, wie wir Energie herstellen, verbrauchen und verteilen. Wir wollen einen sozial-ökologischen System Change.
Deshalb stellen wir uns vom 28. bis 30. Mai dem Gasausbau und der Militarisierung im Ruhrgebiet gemeinsam in den Weg. Vom 1. bis 6. September treffen wir uns auf dem „Rheinmetall Entwaffnen“ Camp in Köln wieder. Und in Hamburg werden wir dafür sorgen, dass das Nato Manöver vom 24. bis 26. September abgesagt wird.
