We are doing an excursion in the Eastern Ghats, about 400 km, in an area where our agri-biodiversity startup works in finding agrobiodiversity hotspots, which may exist because of some geographical and/or cultural reasons. Once identified, we try to connect them to an economic supply chain, while tracking longitudinal data to ensure the economic connection doesn’t end up killing what it was supposed to preserve. In this process, we intend to make our money, which may happen in 3 to 4 years. One of the initial produce is Budama rice, a wild rice native to this area.
This said, this cycle will only be viable if we can cut our marketing cost. These products can’t be sold via general or modern trade, as the numbers are too small to make any SKU possible. This leaves only online sales, and if we use the traditional route of performance or paid influencer marketing, it will remain a cash-burn game, which currently it is.
Which brought us to the current idea: that it may make sense to bring some people with a first-adopter mindset—who are curious, can go beyond absolutes and work with relatives—to interact with people, culture, and land where we are trying to do the initial set of experiments. In other words, it’s our way of bringing in people who may bring richer perspective to what we are doing and may find value in what we are doing, may be spread this word in their own preferred way . This could be one way to cut this 60% overhead which is non-value add.
Hence this excursion for 10 people. 5 places are already taken. As this was never about money, we thought it may make sense to add more diversity to this group by offering both a subsidized rate as well as outsourcing curation. So we are offering the next 5 seats at 25% cost—just 10k—and we are asking for referrals, who you think will be a good fit for this. Either they can pay 10k, or you their referer can pay for them.
