If you are making a non-paper submission of the Indonesian Pluriverse - may I suggest you protect the work from AI thieves?

The UK Society of Authors is developing a ‘fully Author made’ insignia to attach to m/s in the hope of legally protecting all creative work.

It is so important - as we find ways to de-colonise ourselves - that we are not captured by this latest tentacle of ‘development’.

In fact, t is urgent that we ‘pluriversals’ open up a wide global debate on AI impacts as soon as possible.

So sorry for long delaying communication among us.

Last month, I am starting to search for funding translation to continue Indonesian Pluriverse project. I hope we get a good news next week. Hendro sangkoyo agreed for translating the remains chapter. He needs 3-4 months to work on this. Insist press agreed for printing but we need partial money for printing. We still have time until the Indonesian translation ready.  I will discuss this with Nino this afternoon.

Hi Ashish,

I apologize for the delayed response to your previous emails. We are currently in the process of uploading the translated chapters to this website: https://eutenika.org/archives/category/artikel/pluriverse. Unfortunately, we do not have any further material resources available to publish the content in a book format.

If you or anyone else has any suggestions, please do not hesitate to share them with us.

All the best,
Nino

To respond Ariel,
You are right. Indonesian and Malay are in the same language family, but there are many differences in meaning of the same word. Sometimes the meaning is not only different but also contradictory. I, however, am very curious to know the Malay translation project. So that I can do a comparison.

Dear Ashish and Ariel,

Again, representing the Indonesian team I apologize for the inconvenience. I really appreciate your concern and understand your disappointment.

I would like to inform you that there are some chapters that have already been translated into Bahasa Indonesia. Since at the moment we don't have any funds to make a printable version, I would like to ask your permission to publish those chapters on our website (eutenika.org). FYI, we have a similar project to translate some articles on undisciplinedenvironments.org into Bahasa Indonesia (https://eutenika.org/archives/category/artikel/lingkungan-tak-terdisiplinkan).

If you agree with such an arrangement, we can begin with publishing some already translated chapters; and continue to translate and publish other chapters gradually. The main mission is to circulate basic ideas to the Indonesian public. Once we have found funds to make a print edition, we can take down the online article.

All the best,
Nino

Dear Nino, thanks for your response. This is disappointing, though understandable. It would have been nice to hear about this from you earlier.

I'm afraid we have no source of support for this. Pluriverse itself was put together with completely voluntary inputs from all authors, and all editors; we've never sought funds for it. Sorry!

One thing that we have encouraged is for people to translate portions of the book that are most relevant to the local context, or that form a common theme; for instance this was done for 10 essays dealing with democracy, into Hindi, whcih could then be published together as a slim booklet.

If you have any funders in mind and would like to write a proposal for a professional translation, we as editors could give a letter of recommendation if that helps. Otherwise anyway, if something changes on your end, do let us know.

thanks

Dear Ashish,

I am very, very sorry for a late response to your inquiry. I had to make sure with other key coordinators -- @Siti Maemunah and @Lubabun Ni’am -- before I could write this reply to you.

In response to your question, our process is stuck. We planned the translation project as a participatory model, but it turned out that such a model could not work well. We could not get as many participants as we needed to help the translation projects. Since this is voluntary, not all participants were proactive to continue the process. We did have a conversation to alternate the model -- by searching for a professional translator. But the fee was very high, and that did not include the printing cost.

Pluriverse is a thick book, with more than 100 different concepts. To shift from one concept to another was not easy to do by one person only. Sometimes, each contributor has specific terms in his/her writing. Another thing, there are some contributors who are using a very distinct, new concept/term which has yet an equivalent term in Bahasa Indonesia.

After having separate conversations with Mai and Ni'am, we all agree that the translation project of Pluriverse to Indonesian audiences is very important for triggering alternative discourses towards the regime of (economic) development. However, with our recent, actual condition we have to be realistic that without additional support and resources we could not continue the translation at the moment. If you have any ideas or suggestions, I am all ears.

Last but not least, if @Siti Maemunah or @Lubabun Ni’am wants to add something, please feel free to do so.

All the best,
Nino

A presentation of this kind is worth doing, certainly. I hope your submission is successful. If this is online and is multi-lingual, one of the editors can surely participate.

I was not in Bandung for teh event Vijay was there for, rather we had the 2nd physical Assembly of the Global Tapestry of Alternatives.

Hi Ariel,

I want to jump into the plan of organizing a non-paper submission for the Indonesian version of Pluriverse (translated as "Jagad Majemuk").

The format of the event is a simple book discussion. So we don't have to submit a digital copy of the work to their system or anything related to the Symposium. The committee only requires an abstract of the book discussion. From my end, I would not worry too much about AI stealing the work during the Symposium.

For your information, the Symposium itself raises an umbrella theme "Pluriversal Futures in a Multipolarising World: Global South Perspectives". Please find the information regarding the event here: https://simposiumjai.ui.ac.id/. The Call for Abstract Panel is open until May 18th. Just to circulate this information, wondering if anyone here is interested in participating in one of the panels (or more).

However, I do agree about the urgent need to develop ideas regarding mitigation strategies of the impact of the wide spreading of AI.

All the best,
Nino
