On World Food Day, we’re calling for a transformation of the food system

War on Want

Hi Ariel,

Every meal we eat is connected to oil and gas.

From the fertilisers and pesticides sprayed on fields to the plastic packaging on supermarket shelves, fossil fuels run through the veins of our food system. And it’s people and planet paying the price.

Ariel, click to read more about how fossil fuels are shaping our food system – and what we can do about it.

Fossil fuel corporations like Shell, ExxonMobil and Chevron have been investing in ‘agrochemicals’ – pesticides and fertilisers used in industrial farming, some of them highly toxic.

While corporations profit, small-scale farmers in the Global South are pushed into poverty. But there’s another path: farming that centres farmers and workers’ rights and health, and preserves biodiversity, also known as peasant agroecology. Ariel, click to find out more.

Fossil fuel companies have the power to influence global food policies and international climate talks. Agrochemical corporations – such as Bayer and Syngenta – which rely on fossil-fuel-derived chemicals – will be at the UN Climate Summit (COP30). We must challenge them with our vision for a transformation of the food system that serves people and planet.

In solidarity,

Sabrina Espeleta
