I wanted to share a powerful experience I had on Tuesday night. I attended a lecture as part of the JFK Arts and Consciousness Community Art lecture series. It was entitled Aum, The Primordial Healing Art by Silvia Nakkach. Silvia uses chanting and singing as a healing modality. She leads the Vox Mundi Project and is passionately teaching people all across the globe how to use their voice for healing.

What I got out of this lecture, in addition to a sound buzz, was that sound healing is really so simple. It is all about your intention. She had us just sit there and hum, or make whatever noise wanted to come out of us, and it felt incredible!

Silvia really challenged us to allow our voices to arise without judgment by simply making sounds. It was liberating and really raised my energy levels. I was reminded of what someone told me once about how when you are singing it is physically impossible for your body to be contracted. The sound waves move through your cells, vibrating them and loosening things up.

As someone who has sung professionally and trained vocally, I realized that I have spent a lot of time critiquing my voice...learning the mechanics of how to sing. So many people are taught to judge their voice, especially folks who are performers (me included), thinking it is "not good enough," comparing it to others, worrying it doesn't sound ok, on tune, pretty, etc. Silvia shared with us that she does not perform. Even though she gets up in front of hundreds of people and sings, she isn't performing. She is using her body as an instrument for healing spirit energy. She gets out of the way and lets spirit take over. How beautiful! And that is the heart of ALL healing.

I went up to Silvia afterwards and told her I had spent years learning how to sing, and now I need to unlearn how to sing. To get out of my own way and let spirit sing through me, however it wants to sound.

I encourage you to take some time each day and make some noise. Maybe while you are in the shower or doing dishes or on a walk. Sometimes I like to sing while I'm doing yoga. Wherever you find yourself make some sound today.

Soften into it and play! It doesn't even have to make sense. We made up some beautiful melodies with just the word AUM and nothing else. Open up and let your creativity, your spirit energy, have a voice!

One of my favorite chants is the one used at the beginning of Anusara Yoga. I often find myself humming or singing it throughout the day, especially when my energy starts to dip. Here are the words and tune if you would like to learn it as well.

Namaste.
