Momokos teacher asks the third grade to draw a picture based on their favorite song, to enter in a contest. She picks a song she's recently become fond of during music class, and is anxious to make a good drawing based on it. On her way to meet relatives in Shizuoka, Momoko meets Shoko Kimura, a university student who occasionally draws portraits and plans to participate in an art contest. Momoko and Shoko become close friends, and end up inspiring each other both in their own ways.

Maruko's class is given an assignment to draw a picture inspired by their favourite songs. We see the students' crude, charming artwork, but also glimpses into their imaginations through several incredibly animated musical sequences. As the film progresses, we learn more about how music and art relate to Maruko's friends and family, and her appreciation grows alongside it.
Loved this so much. Kind of stuff where the silliest possible sequences exist in the same plane as some truly surreal music videos featuring a haruomi hosono to indonesian reggae. And a whole yuasa sequence backed by eiichi ohtaki vocals. Can't get better than that.
I've caught some bits of the show here & there, but unless you grew up watching Maruko-chan in Japan, it's gonna be a blind spot. I've seen it come up as being Japan's The Simpsons, which is a stretch. Maybe first season Simpsons at most as it's all pretty cute & harmless, yet heartfelt. This movie is no different, but the budget on these is always bigger which is reflected in the amount of frames, and then every 15 or so minutes they take a popular song and it goes off in this really dynamically animated set piece. It's those parts where, when I look at the crew that worked on it, I'm not in the least surprised Masaaki Yuasa was involved.
