  • Background  – the relationship between Finland and the USSR 1917-39 and impact of the rise of Nazi Germany
  • The rival Armies – size, training, equipment and tactics
  • Marshal Mannerheim and his pivotal role in Finland’s politics and defence.

  • ‘Sisu’ and the ‘White Death’ – the myth and reality of Finland’s successful defence.
  • The Red Army’s resurgence and reasons for ultimate success.
  • The terms of Finland’s Armistice.
  • Consequences of the Winter War for Finland, the USSR, Nazi Germany and the Allies

David Caldwell-Evans Having grown up surrounded by wartime relics on Britain’s Channel Coast, David Caldwell-Evans has had a lifelong interest in military history. Over the last twenty years he has been able to put this passion to good use while making television documentaries for the likes of Channel 4, Channel 5, UKTV, National Geographic and the History Channel.

His past work includes the five-part series ‘Project Nazi: Blueprints of Evil’, films about the Battles of Stalingrad, Berlin, Saipan and Peleliu, and an examination of Britain’s Moslem soldiers in both world wars for Al-Jazeera called ‘For Allah, King and Country’. More recently he was the Story Producer on ‘World War Two Battles in Colour’ – a forthcoming Smithsonian Channel series.

Besides land warfare, David’s interests include warship design and naval operations and when creating the highly successful series ‘Abandoned Engineering’ this enabled him to include some extraordinary surviving wrecks and coastal artillery sites around the world which had never previously been filmed for television.

Over the years David has been privileged to interview many veterans of the Second World War and more recent conflicts and besides producing and directing documentaries he has also appeared on screen telling the extraordinary stories of the missing art treasure ‘The Amber Room’ and the ‘Hippopotamus’ – the First World War Italian 149mm gun still perched on a knife-edged ridge 6000 feet up in the Dolomites.

The Zoom link will be emailed to you on the day this talk.

Woodcote Village Hall Meeting

Mike Tickner is a regular army officer with a keen interest in the Indian Army and regularly speaks to military and civilian groups and clubs, writes articles and has led battlefield studies. Service on the NW Frontier was characterised by searing heat, freezing winds, boredom, fatigue and sudden, violent death. Between 1936-7, 60,000 Indian and British troops deployed to Waziristan to fight the Fakir of Ipi in the last major Frontier campaign before independence. Join the Column as it advances through the mountains and is attacked by Wazir and Mahsud tribesmen. Will the Column reach their camp tonight?

If you would like to join us at this meeting in Woodcote Village Hall then please book your seats in advance by emailing us on in...@bmmhs.org

Now Available on Amazon Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Falkland Islands

‘The Task Force’s victory in the Falkland Islands gave freedom back to the Islanders, releasing a vibrant energy to develop their lives. This fascinating compendium is another triumph in the “Glimpses” series!’               Major General Dair Farrar-Hockley MC, 2 Para in the Falklands

Glimpses of the Falklands War, from the British Modern Military History Society, recounts some of the personal experiences and stories of over 100 service men and women, Falkland Islanders and others who were involved in the Falklands War, 40 years ago.  These range from the early stages with the Argentine invasion and occupation, the Task Force heading south, to the recapture and liberation of Stanley 74 days later.   This book tells tales of heroism and tragedy, of fear and resilience, of sadness and joy, many graphically and emotionally told, not least by the Falkland Islanders who lived under a strict occupation during that time.

These stories are from many unsung heroes – the dockworkers who prepared the ships in record time, the helicopter pilots who rescued casualties from blazing vessels, freezing waters and mountainsides, the medics and padres who tended to the wounded both friend and foe alike, to the teenagers who manned the defence systems on the ships, the courage of the bomb disposal teams, or the ground troops which yomped and tabbed across rugged terrain to Stanley and the final victory.  Each and every one made an important contribution to the victory against an unwanted aggressor.

This is a unique book with many stories previously untold. Every sale generates a donation to Blind Veterans UK, as with the previous two volumes of Glimpses of War.  www.bmmhs.org

Glimpses of the Falklands War has been published to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Liberation Day, and is now available on Amazon.

Please tell your friends and associates about this project, and do buy the book as it is for a very worthy cause.

And finally… Facebook.

Dear Friend of Millbank

A reminder - our Falklands War talks on 1 July. Please register now via www.friendsofmillbank.org if you have not already done so, and feel free to share this invitation.

Our two speakers, John Burgess and David Jackson, each have compelling stories to tell, based on their own experience - John was Regimental Officer with 3 Para (participating in the crucial night battle for Mount Longdon), while David commanded No.1 Field Surgical Team. The talks will be in person at Millbank and simultaneously on Zoom, commencing at 1800hrs, Friday 1 July. The Zoom session will open ten minutes beforehand. More details are on the attached flyer (N.B. Lateral flow tests are optional).

John has recently recorded for us an Oral History of his Falklands experience. I recommend listening to it this week, it is on our Members Area at https://www.friendsofmillbank.org/oral_history/

In addition, I highly recommend the newly published 'Glimpses of the Falklands War' by the British Modern Military History Society (BMMHS), available through Amazon, which is raising funds for Blind Veterans UK. This book features many eye-witness accounts, including by our two speakers and Jim Ryan. See our Glimpses of War section for details, https://www.friendsofmillbank.org/gow/

Lt Gen Lillywhite has recommended the following online talk, 'The Falklands War 1982 - 'A Close Run Thing' - see https://www.sofo.org.uk/whats-on/falklandswar1982/ It's a sometimes humorous, revealing presentation by the individual who was parachuted in (literally) to take over 3 PARA (and in due course commanded the Airborne Brigade).

I look forward to seeing you on Friday 1 July.

In Arduis Fidelis

David
