Start time: 8pm.
We are delighted to welcome acclaimed public speaker Thomas Macey. For a change, it's a general interest talk on the history of Reading and a festival of all things Victorian. In particular, the Jackson's Corner department store. Thomas worked there until it closed and has done an amazing job preserving its history. So yes, vacuum tubes are involved but not the ones we are used to! A few of you will remember the cash distribution system they had. Thomas is looking at making it work again, if on a smaller scale along with other artefacts.
This is no dusty old history talk - prepare to be informed and entertained! It will cover a period from the mid 1800's to the store's closure a while ago now.
Thomas is very much looking forward to meeting us.
Stove-pipe hats/Victorian attire required for admission :-)
Refreshments to be served aplenty as usual. If you wish to partake of tea or coffee then please bring a mug. You are welcome to bring along your favourite tipple. Adequate supplies of biscuits and (jaffa) cakes will be available. Perhaps a Victoria Sponge cake should be procured....
No zoom this time.
