Newly minted amateur with a question: as I now have my radio and am able to tinker on 40m, 20m and 10m I'm wondering if there is a club or external listing of regular nets on these bands?

I know of the one or two mentioned here on 4m, but that's about it. Couldn't find anything on the club's website, Facebook page or here.

Matt,

I'm not aware of a local listing of nets. At one time, I could have
directed you to 20 nets with regular frequencies on 80 metres, with
special interests, meeting several days of the week at regular times.

These days, that happens on 40 metres for several national societies
and lots of old friends groups. There are not many of these who live
locally to Reading.

You might note the Worked All Britain Group on 7,160 KHz, most mornings

The Royal Air Force Group on 7,109 KHz at 6.30pm most days

Summits on the Air, various frequencies.

Railways on the Air,

The best source of QSO's is on Saturdays when Special Event Stations
are running on 40 metres. A lot of these are sympathetic to new
amateurs gaining experience on the bands and will not worry about
mistakes, etc. You may need to persevere calling, if other stations
get the replies when you are trying to get heard. That's called a
pile-up! and can be fun.

Also fun is a QSO arranged with another local ham, over the phone. It
can help while you get the aerial higher and problems sorted out.

Hi Matt, Harry,

I think there has been a bit of dyslexia (how do you spell it?) in this reply.  From the Rafars Webpage the morning net is at 11 am local on 7,080 kHz on weekdays, the evening net is at 6.30 pm on 3,710 kHz on weekdays.

I think that they are a "closed shop" and probably don't want us "non RAF types" muscling in on the action.  I was rejected by the RAF when I became too tall for the cockpit on their training aircraft.  I had passed the aptitude tests and medical requirements for training as a pilot and then........... wham! no career, bye bye.

I sometimes listen in to the evening one as our Colin Couston takes part in this session and I can tell when he is likely to be at home if I want to call him.

If you want to track down special event stations that are active you might point your browser at the DX Cluster website.  This is a listing of people's contacts which updates in near real time.  You need to scan down the list for call signs with unusual formats.  A good one this week is GB70DDAY for the D Day celebrations.

Do you know about GB2RS?  the RSGB news broadcast, catch it live on Sunday morning or find it on the RSGB website.  Each week there will be a section with special event stations for the week ahead.

Lastly, if your radio can do it, pick a band and set it to scan, slowly through the "non narrow band modes" frequencies until it finds a contact and then call them back when you hear CQ CQ.

Good luck.

RAF or ex RAF.   In fact if you lidten apart from Anoraks like me, there is very little 'Shop'
