to Reading and District Amateur Radio Group, John Gumb
Dear RADARC Member,
Those of you who know me "from of old" wiil know that I have been a
bit of a Fanatic collector of
historic Amateur Radio magazines like Practical Wireless, The
Bulletin, QST and Radio Constructor.
Anything from 1913 to 1953, in fact. The years when real radio was
happening for the first and second times
and everybody and his family, (and dog), was surprised by
achievements by amateurs in communications.
These mags reported the events of the day. When you read them there
is an immediacy which sits you on the
edge of your chair - and you are alert to what might possibly happen
next, or possibly just after that! Now that
transistors, then ICs, have taken over from the amplion 3-electrode
tube and digital techniques have made things
so accurate, we can reflect on what's happened in our lifetimes.
Well, we could reflect, if we had the mags to delve into and re-live
the experiences of the old hams of 1922 and
1913.
Of the early titles, the Radio Constructor is quite a collectable,
because it had nice coloured covers and good
diagrams. It was published monthly and appealed to the practical
chap who inhabited the friendly fringes of
our great hobby, and who liked making things. I remember re-homing
some Radio Constructors in 2020/21
through the Club and you have probably finished reading them by now.
Point is that I have a package of 9 of these nice mags just ready to
post to a ham called Simon in the far north of
England. Simon is a great collector. And there aren't really enough
to fill the box.......
So the point of my words will be becoming clear. Do you have any odd
copies of Radio Constructor sitting
around dangerously edging nearer to the re-cycling bin? Do not let
her put them any nearer. Read them again,
then reply to this appeal from me and we'll get them saved into one
of the most important archives of radio
history. I will get them collected and sent to Simon. And make him
happy.
America has "QST", France has "Ondes", but we have "Radio Constructor".
