Stewardship in Action: Restoration work isn’t always pretty but it’s an important part of caring for the land. You may notice some changes at Wau-Ke-Na, W.E. Smith Preserve South Tract this spring, and we want to prepare you for what’s ahead! As part of a major habitat restoration project, contractors will begin clearing a former Christmas tree plantation near the front of the preserve. Non-native trees will be removed, chipped, and repurposed, making way for native grassland species that support endangered grassland birds and monarch butterflies. We know this kind of work can look and sound disruptive. Heavy equipment, tree removal, and temporary closures may feel at odds with “protecting nature.” But like any meaningful restoration effort, this is a critical step toward creating a healthier, more resilient ecosystem. Please know that with this project, we carry forward preserve donor William E. Smith’s grassland initiative at Wau-Ke-Na and his legacy to create a better world for the wildlife with whom we share these spaces. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we carry this work forward. Temporary closures will occur throughout the spring and summer to ensure public safety. Please check our website and social media for updates and to learn more about the project. -
