Here's a thought (and just a thought):

http://code.google.com/p/savage-beast-2/
http://www.williambharding.com/blog/rails/savage-beast-20/

I haven't looked at all the ins-and-outs, but the activity/interest
from the developer seems pretty current, and I get the impression it
could fairly easily be integrated into the existing Rails project as a
plug-in, with a few gems along for the ride (e.g. Engines).

I couldn't get a response from http://beast.caboo.se tonight, but I
assume that's a full-blown, standalone Rails app. Nothing wrong with
that, I suppose, except there would probably need to be some sub-
domain resolution (mod_rails, anyone?), and then the users table would
be different, so people would have separate log-ons.

For that matter, do they have log on credentials now? I see a
username and password in the User model, but I don't see any log-in
buttons on OBRA. Is this just for the admin interface?

Thanks,

Yeah, I agree. The Beast is pretty sexy, and I've wanted to ditch the
poorly-constructed Rails archive + Mailman thing I've got going on
OBRA. It's just one of those things that works OK as-is, so I've never
improved it.

This raises the question: is one big integrated Rails apps with
results, forum, CMS, etc. better than a couple of independent
applications? Mailman does its job very well—just replace the lousy UI
with a nice one? Why use a Rails forum if phpBB is better? Not sure ....

Yeah, the User model is just for admins, but non-admin user accounts
would be useful for a number of things: forum, self-updates to contact
information, race reg.
