West Coast Regional Training on the

UN & CERD

CERD is the United Nations International Convention on the Elimination
of Racial Discrimination. It is a legally binding treaty that obliges
Member States to take effective action to prevent and eliminate racial
discrimination. The United States Senate ratified CERD in 1994 and is
therefore legally bound by all provisions in this treaty. On a
periodic basis, the US is required to submit a report detailing
efforts to fulfill its obligations. In March 2008, the US is due to
report to the UN CERD Committee, which monitors Member States'
compliance. This is an immensely important moment for activists
working on racial discrimination in the U.S. to take advantage of the
opportunity to promote policy changes in their communities.

We will provide a one-day training for activists working on the West
Coast to learn about the human rights framework with a particular
focus on the CERD process. The training will also educate participants
on UN advocacy strategies and connect this global process to promote
change in our local communities.

WILD for Human Rights & the US Human Rights Network have engaged in
extensive human rights education, training, and implementation to
improve the quality of life for diverse communities across the U.S. We
are delighted to invite grassroots advocates working on social justice
issues such as health, poverty, labor, education, economic justice,
women's rights, immigrant rights, and other issues important to your
communities.
