A superb, dynamic theater piece at the Barrow Street Theatre in NYC…Have the courage to deal with the thoughts, memories and emotions of US Iraq War vets? If so spend an evening of theater with soldiers who had the courage to talk about the war in Iraq  and the war of chaos and inhumanity  in their minds when they return home. And how they were in conflict in Iraq (is that woman holding a baby or a bomb?) and the war inside them when they return.

As the soldiers come to life in “In Conflict”, we bear witness to their experiences in Iraq.  The play, in the actual words of men and women soldiers, takes us far beyond the complete spectrum of their views of the war.  Yvonne Latty’s interviews open the military men and women up to their deep level of humanity that they share with us and with the Iraqis they fought for, with, and against.

Director Douglas Wager adapted the interviews in Latty’s book“In Conflict,” bringing them to life in a play performed by students of Temple University’s theater department chaired by Roberta Sloan. Most of the actors are Temple students who are the same ages as the veterans – and already skilled, disciplined, highly talented actors.

Co-produced by Alan Buchman’s The Culture Project* and Temple University at the Barrow Street Theatre, 37 Barrow (at 7th Ave near Bleeker - IRT 1 to Christopher). First show was 09-18-08. Not sure how long it will be their and soon it will be alternating with another Culture Project play.

If you’re not in NYC, please forward this to friends who might be interested. And you can buy Yvonne Latty’s book, “In Conflict”

No, I’m not doing free  PR. Or paid. I just think the soldiers’ voices are too important to miss. And a rare example of political theater that reaches deeply into the human spirit. I also have a friend with PSTD from his time in the Viet Nam war and I feel I’m inside his head during this play.

Dear Friend,

IN CONFLICT, Culture Project's explosive new play based on candid interviews with 15 veterans of the Iraq War, kicks off performances on September 18th.

This very moment, the future of each soldier who has fought in Iraq, and survived, is at stake.  As the 2008 election approaches, IN CONFLICT gives us the opportunity to learn about the crucial issues facing veterans today through firsthand accounts that are unsparing in their honesty.

Because what does "supporting our troops" really mean?

Supporting our troops must go beyond parades, political sound-bites and empty rhetoric.

Supporting our troops means listening to the unfiltered, often difficult stories veterans have to tell about the human cost of war.

And it must entail honoring their experiences in a meaningful way.

Temple University's acclaimed production of IN CONFLICT helps us understand the human cost behind the facts and figures of this war, through stories of real veterans who are struggling to rebuild their lives today.

I urge you to come see the show and make up your own minds, in this election year, about what our troops need and how you can help show your support.
