We should work on an initial reaction/press release to the report!

Subject: [cerdshadow] US REPORT TO CERD RELEASED!!!

WIth typical fanfare, the US released their report earlier this week (though I've been checking, and I only found it on their website today):

http://www.state.gov/g/drl/hr/race/cerd_report/

Attached are a number of documents from our previous media efforts if anyone is interested in trying to get media attention.  None were geared toward the release of the US report (rather the release of our shadow report and the Concluding Observations from the Committees), but they should be helpful in terms of general framing.  Some, but not all, were prepared with the assistance of Fenton Communications, who did some research into how to hook media on the concept, so we can benefit from that.  The documents are:

  • Compiled Press Releases - a short introductory piece from Fenton, followed by 3-sentence reaction statements from many of the participating organizations in the shadow reporting coalition
  • Exceptionalism talking points - from Fenton, short talking points on US exceptionalism
  • ICCPR Press Release Template - from Fenton, framing the release of our report with room for specific issue inclusion
  • NLCHP Press Release - one example of filling in the template blanks
  • UN rights body - showing how Reuters covered the story based on our releases

Other useful info:

  • CERD Concluding Observations from first report: http://www1.umn.edu/humanrts/usdocs/conclcomments-usa.html  - there's nothing specifically on juvenile justice, but paragraphs 14-16 are certainly applicable.  If the U.S. doesn't address these issues in its new report, it may be worth pointing out the absence of follow up.

If anyone does succeed in getting media attention, please share your releases and success stories with the group!

Good luck,
Eric
