Hi Team,

I also wanted to introduce Mike and Penny Herlihy.  Mike and Penny set up RACHEL at the Byimana school in Rwanda.  They wrote a fantastic post about it here.

Hopefully there is some room to collaborate in Rwanda.

best,
jeremy

Hi Ted,

If I can jump in here there is a school in Kigali which has two Raspberry Pis with the RACHEL content.  I am copying the director, Edna de Bonilla, on this email.  The school is The Earth School http://www.theearthschoolafrica.com/.

The Earth School - The International Montessori School of Rwanda

The Earth School is a private international Montessori preschool and elementary school in Kigali, Rwanda for children 2-12 years old

Perhaps they would be willing to give a demonstration to some of your people on the ground in Kigali.  We do have updated content since the beginning of the year when Edna took the two Pis from Guatemala to Kigali.  The content has been expanded and now also includes KA Lite, the interactive, offline Khan website.  Best regards, Joan

Ted,

Thank you kindly for thinking of us and making the introduction.  I remember working with Diana, great to hear she’s spreading the word.

Vedaste and Betty,

It’s a pleasure to be connected with you.  We can help you acquire RACHEL for use in IEE or distribution through you.  RACHEL is the best educational content available online, compressed, and made available for use offline in situations like yours.  It amounts to about 64GB of content, including an encyclopedia (Wikipedia), video lectures (khan academy), health resources (various) and computer skills (various).

When users can download that kind of size file, it is an easy process through our website.  Otherwise we can work on shipping channels.  Do you have easy access to high bandwidth or reliable shipping channels from the U.S.?

Best,
jeremy

Subject: inquiry for IEE Rwanda

Hello,

My name is Ted Parker; I'm a teacher at King, an independent school in Stamford, Connecticut, USA. We participate in an exchange with an International Education Exchange, an NGO in Kigali that offers teacher-training throughout Rwanda and is sponsored by the Rwanda Ministry of Education.

As I spoke last week about technology with visitors from IEE, they described challenges throughout Rwanda with inconsistent and/or low-bandwidth Internet connections, which prevent schools from taking advantage of much of the best educational content on the web. The very next day, Diana Martelly, a colleague in my graduate program, described to me her experience working with World Possible while she was upper school principal at the American International School in Abuja, Nigeria. I thought immediately of the good you might be able to do with IEE in Rwanda.

I have copied Betty Kabeera and Vedaste Kanamugire, two of IEE's teacher-trainers who visited us. I promised to try and put them in touch with you so that you all can interact directly. I'm happy to lend any more help I can, but there may be no more need to filter through me!

Many thanks for your time and consideration, and congratulations on the good work that you do. If you have a mailing list, I'd love to get on it; we at King are always looking for partners in service.

Very best wishes,

Ted

Students: let's get into the habit of writing more formal correspondence to one another, with a salutation at the beginning and a sign-off at the end. It's a good habit to cultivate as you prepare to correspond with professors in college and with anyone in your career.

Hello,

I am working at Maranyundo Girls School in Nyamata, just outside of Kigali and we just got a Raspberry Pi and RACHEL last week. I would love to get in touch with you to see how it is being used in your schools! A teacher training session was completed here, but it would be great to see how you encouraged the teachers to use it and how they are making use of it right now. Also, any hiccups you encountered when trying to implement it. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you.
