Alright guys, I’ll try to keep this email short, but there’s a decent amount that we covered tonight at the meeting.
Just a reminder that we are trying for a Tuesday practice next semester! We will obviously re-evaluate this at the beginning of next semester once everyone has finalized their schedules, but shoot for free Tuesday afternoons!
For the rest of the semester, the people that came to the meeting decided on tactics talks on Mondays. Everyone should be free as Mondays were practice days beforehand! And I promise this will actually happen this time(turns out there are other places you can reserve a room besides the CRC….who knew!) and they will be held from 4-5/5:30pm in the Student Center in room 359!
The weekend of Nov. 21, along with the Gill Sale, there is a high school regatta going on at LLSC on Saturday. Martine(LLSC Jr. Director and a huge help to our club) needs our help to run it! This is going to be a great event to get our name out as a college sailing program and try to “recruit” sailors to come to GT for both school and sailing. Not to mention, this is a great way to give back to the LLSC that does so much for us all the time. If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know! Conner and I are definitely going up; we will take my car, and I would love to have at least 5 of us total!
For next semester, I am looking into a coach for our weekly practices. With hiring a coach, comes the cost of a coach. We receive $500 per semester from SGA for a coach. LLSC is looking into hiring a coach for the Jr. program, and we would probably end up hiring the same person.
Coaching Options
Joint Practices with UGA and potential high school program, split 16 boats 3 ways=potentially limiting space at practice each week(we’ve been averaging 8 boats a practice), would definitely be completely by SGA budget
Separate Practices, up to 16 boats to fill and would not limit space at practice in any way, could potentially cost more than SGA budget=raise race team dues $15-$20
None of this is final! I just need to know the general interest of the club. If we can make a joint practice work without limiting space, we are definitely going to try that! I just want to know now if Option 2 is OK with everyone or not before I start looking into it, only if it comes to that of course. Please let me know if Option 2 would be a problem for you and would be a reason you wouldn’t join race team in the spring! A coach will take this team to the next level, and I’m really trying to make it work!
5. NEXT WEEKEND, Nov. 14-15, there is a Development Clinic in Charleston. We missed the RSVP date, but I emailed Greg Fisher to see if by any chance there is any extra space in the clinic. I did this because people at the meeting said they’d be interested in going. Apparently my email about it last Saturday didn’t go to everyone, but if you’re interested in going, you NEED to let me know ASAP! The cost would be entirely on personal budgets, so gas, food, hotel rooms, but all split between everyone. Also, both days of the clinic are not required, so people going to go for 1 day(1 night in a hotel) or both (2 nights in a hotel). Obviously, it’s very possible this won’t work out anyways because space in the clinic might be filled up, but if Greg Fisher says there’s space, then we need to be ready to tell them how many people we’re going to send!
Well, that’s all I’ve got! If you have any questions, feel free to ask! @people at the meeting, if I missed anything, let me know!
Have a great weekend! See you all Monday!
