Atthe AppStore (with macOS 10.13 High Sierra), open the fourth tab with your previous purchases, not the first tab. On the first tab you can only download the new, current versions. The purchase history might offer you to reinstall older versions for your system.
If you do plan to update to Big Sur, as always make sure you make a Time Machine backup first. That way if you DO have compatibility issues or just hate it or something, you can revert back to your current setup.
Followed your steps as I have had on my mac in the past.
The version it downloads is old (6.0.5) and will not install as it is 32bit.
My Mac is a 2013 model running Catalina 10.15.7
Any ideas?
Hello,I have a first gen iPad.I got difficulty restore the deleted Garageband app. The app in iTunes is version 2.x.x. and cant be installed.I had once on a telephone Apple support in japan, afterall she told me very kindly that i cant get back the app because its too old. I think that i have no way but using a newer version on another iPad. BTW I wonder if i get an ipad with older version of it, i can transfer the app to my ipad. How do you think?
It seems very strange that (for people like myself who bought an older MAC that cannot be updated to the latest OS) for APPLE to then force us to look for pirate/shonky versions of Garageband. How difficult would it be for them to allow older versions for older computers?
dang it, we only have older macs but the one i record on has the latest version, the one my hubby mixes and masters it on is older and has can only run older version, i just went to load the song into the old mac for mixing and oh dear, it wont load the file as it is recorded on a newer version of garageband. rethink required. all his presets for plugins etc are on the old mac. Both macs struggle with the files but was tryng to avoid paying for a new mac :{ didnt even think of that when i did an update a while back.
I did not read through the comments to see if someone offered this solution but the workaround on an older Mac is to sign into another Apple ID where the program was previously downloaded, download the older version, then log out. I logged into my Apple ID account on my old Mac laptop, downloaded Garage Band, then logged back out and logged my kid back in. Worked like a charm.
Yes, it works.
Old Macbook Pro using MacOS Big Sur (Unable to install GarageBand latest version)
On newer MacBook Pro running MacOS Monterey: Delete GarageBand app
On Old MacBook Pro: Login to App Store using same Apple ID as newer MacBook Pro
Search for GarageBand. It will download GarageBand version compatible to macOS Big Sur

I am currently collaborating with someone who is working on an older version of Logic (10.4.4, running on OS Sierra) and we are looking for a way to transfer Logic projects easily back and forth. Since we are in the middle of a big project so a complete upgrade is out of the question, so I was thinking if there is a way for me to have two versions of Logic on my computer (my current one and an older one which would open on his computer), and use the older version when we are working on a joint project.
Just for clarity: I hope you are not copying the 10.6.3 version of the app, renaming that to 10.4.8, and expecting it to magically turn into the 10.4.8 app. You do actually need the 10.4.8 version of the app. (This may seem obvious, but sometimes it's difficult to know whether someone is following along or not...)
Also remember that double-clicking a Logic project will continue to open it in whatever the default Logic application is, likely the latest version on your system. You need to actually manually run an old version, and load the project into it, as the OS doesn't know you have multiple versions of Logic and correctly pick the one you want it to open in.
When you say "You do actually need the 10.4.8 version of the app" - how can I "have a version of it" on my computer if I am already on 10.6.3? I don't assume that simply copying the app icon from my collaborator's computer would work... and if not, is there anywhere to get download links for previous versions?
The standard practice is to keep your old versions as you upgrade (or retrieve them from your backups), as Apple don't easily allow you to download old versions. I choose which versions to keep, and which to archive away, and always make a copy and squirrel away a new version update.
Hi all. Just purchased Native to run on my MacBook Pro & iMac but can't see how to set it up with Garage Band as the instructions on Line 6 seem to relate to older versions of Garage Band. Can anyone one help with this please?
Hi, thanks for taking the time. I have had a look at your previous post but the required files and check marks appear to be selected / present. I would note that the video again refers to an older version of GB and therefore I find it difficult ( tech dummy ) to transpose to latest version. Any chance of doing a newer video?
O.K. This video covers the 2019 version of installing plugins and something else I may have overlooked is that you must install the 64bit version of any au component. Also there was an update to version 10.3.4 GarageBand available to download from last week.
If that's the case then what you record into GB on channels 1 & 2 will be the stereo out from your Helix, complete with all the amp, cab and FX for that particular preset you are using. To take advantage of HX Native you need to be able to capture the dry guitar signal from channel 7 of your Helix in order to re-amp the guitar.
No you got iy right to start with but your comments opened up some further thoughts. I had the helix floor but then bought the helix native as it was being offered for $99 which seemed to good to pass up. So I will be looking into the various options regarding recording etc.
First I enabled hidden folders to be viewed. Then in Composer Preferences, I removed /private/var/db from the Exclusion List. I then took a "New & Modified Snapshot". I then downloaded and installed GarageBand 10.0.2 onto a computer that didnt have any previous versions of GarageBand. Once the download completed, i opened GarageBand and was prompted to install the additional free content. I installed that content and open and closed GarageBand a couple of times to make sure it didnt prompt me for anything. I then ran the second snapshot. The source should contain 4 main folders: Applications, Library, private, & Users. The Library/Audio folder will have all the additional loops and sounds. The private/var/db/receipts folder will have all the receipts for the core content and additional loops. This is important. Without these receipts, GarageBand will prompt the user on first launch to install the additional sounds even though the install already has them packaged.
I then built it as a .dmg file and uploaded it to Casper Admin. I checked off the FUT and FEU boxes. I also uploaded a script I found online that removes any previous versions of Garageband and content. I created a policy to install GarageBand and runs the script before the install. I tested it several times and seems to work fine.
My script still works, but I believe there are even more loops available now; I haven't kept up on it since maintaining GarageBand has fallen out of my purview, but once you find the names of the packages, you can just duplicate the code to download the rest.
@jacob_salmela yes there are many more loops now (or they've been broken out from a combination set). I used to install the packages individually when there were less than a dozen. But if memory serves me to get all the loops of the recent version of GB was going to require me to install 40-50 packages. That was more than I wanted to deal with. So I went the composer route.
@donmontalvo @bentoms i put that same ticket in years ago and never went anywhere. I'll put another one in, is there a case number or something I can reference? We have 6k clients too and managing garageband (and logic pro) in labs is a PIA. I keep saying I wish it was like clip art where it downloaded as needed...
