hi!
just a little update on thumpy!
thumpy is getting back to her usual self!..she is hopping about and
eating well and pooping too! :)
yesterday (weds) she was still a little subdued and not eating a great
deal..so i fed her some carrot leaves and her favourite treat..banana!
it seemed to kick start her appetite, and shes eating regularly!

i tried to find some dandelion leaves, but i guess its the wrong time
of year for them now.

i have a question about cilantro, maybe you can help, Ros?
where can i buy some cilantro?..i have looked in all the the major
supermarkets, and have had no luck :(
i really wanna give the buns some cilantro, but only if its fresh..i
dont like the idea of the bunbuns eating dried herbs.

thanks for keeping thumps in your thoughts..its much appreciated! :)

love and bunnyhugs!...xxxxxxxxxx.

Aha! I hadn't realised you live in the UK like me.

Cilantro and coriander are the same thing. I got huge bunches in
Sainsbury's yesterday and a growing plant. You can freeze it too,
better than dried, but you're right, fresh is best. Most supermarkets
up here in Sunderland have it all year round. I'm sure yours will too
if you look for it as coriander. And if you have an Asian foodstores
near you, it'll probably be cheaper there than in the
supermarkets....quite likely fresher as well.

It's great that she's eating again. She must feel fine. Does she
have internal stitches and glue? That's the best as it's much harder
(though not impossible, I can assure you - Rosie managed several
times!) to pull them out.

And I've just realised you're tracetigress from UKCR! Hahaha! I'm a
bit slow aren't I?

Yes Morrisons, Sainsbury, Tesco and Asda all sell coriander in bunches
and as growing plants. I give my 2 about a dozen strands a day.
They'd eat more if I let them but a little bit of decorum, please!
LOL

Great news about the stitches. Good girl, Thumper

UKCR is the Yahoo group UK Companion Rabbits. You joined a while ago
LOL I probably invited you then promptly forgot.

You're lucky to be in Bristol - right next to Bristol Vet School and
Great Western Referrals if you ever have a major bunny problem. They
have some wonderful bunny savvy vets in both. Quite a few UKCR
members live in the same area as you. You should come on more often -
we have a good natter about our bunnies and they're all a great
bunch. Very friendly and knowledgeable. We've got some members who
aren't UK as well - Australia, Hawaii, various other parts of the USA,
Canada, but mostly UK so info about where you can buy stuff and which
vets are good is very useful.

Cheers - happy Sunday

hi ros!
thanks for the coriander info!..i have to go to my local morrisons
later in the week, so i'll have a looksee! :)
hehe..bless your bunns and they're love of corriander!..i did read
once that it can be a little risky to give buns' a lot of herbs
i dont know if thats true or not!

do you know if any of the bigger pet stores (like pets at home) sells
timothy hay?..i have a little pet shop where i get my bunny supplies
from and they only sell meadow hay..ive read about how sophia/
cottontail loves feeding her buns timothy hay and would love to try it
with my own buns!.

sorry for the late response hun..ive been a bit tied up here
lately!..yes i do remember UKCR!..i will definately drop by by the end
of the week!..it is really good to meet fellow bunnyhuggers from the
UK and around the world!
which reminds me, have you heard of "bunspace"? its a social
networking site like myspace for bunnies! :D..all my buns are there..i
think its a supa cool idea!!

Hi Trace

The best places for hay are

www.dustfreehay.co.uk
www.thehayexperts.co.uk and here
http://www.shop.burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk/acatalog/Food_For_Rabbits.html
halfway down the page, the organic mountain hay is absolutely
gorgeous.

I bought a pallet of hay from dustfree this time last year and it's
lasted me and a friend till now. I have 2 bunnies, she has 4. I've
gone through 2 bags of the Burns hay and my friend has had 1 so far.
I'm on my 3rd. Mixing it with the Dustfree hay.

I wouldn't consider getting hay from P@H I was in there today and
their hay is dire. Dusty as can be. I wouldn't use it for anything
but a bonfire. I had horses for over 30yrs and very particular about
hay quality. Dustfree and Burns for me. Actually try the Burns dried
plantain too. Lovely stuff my Varmints love it

btw Morrisons do sell coriander as living plants and packaged, cut
fresh . their Herb Garden Salad is very nice too. My Varmints like
it.

The Varmints are on Bunspace but I refuse to pay hard cash to be a VIB
so they're on the basic level. Here's Cinnamon
http://www.bunspace.com/view_bunny?bunid=463
and Nutmeg
http://www.bunspace.com/view_bunny?bunid=464

Looking fwd to chatting on UKCR. Hahaha! If you can elbow in! It's
really busy atm

hi ros!
thank you for the links!..the american timothy hay from dustfree looks
really good..and quite a reasonable price for 2 bales!..i know that
dinks and thumps would wolf that back!..and so is the mountain
hay..and thats a good price too!..i dont know which to plump
for!..decisions, decisions!

ive never tried hay from p@h..ive considered it, but when ive looked
at it, it always seems to be cut too short!..maybe thats just me
though..my buns like nice long strands of hay!..so i wont be getting
any from there!

yay!..i picked up some coriander from morrisons..i actually bought
both the packet coriander and the growing stuff..the buns have
polished off the packet cori...wow!..they absolutely devoured it
within minutes!..i gave them a few stands at first..when i saw they
enjoyed it i gave them both about 15 strands each!
this may sound a silly question (i have never grown herbs before!) but
once you pick off some cori from the growing tub, does it grow back?
or do i just chuck it once its all been picked off? :S

im not a VIB on bunspace either..i know a lot of folks are, but i
could never justify paying for something that should be free..
i sent invites to your varmints from my varmints!!

i went over to your bun group earlier and did the introduction..blimey
it is busy, lol!

bunnyhugs!....xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

The hay at Dustfree is lovely. Not a speck of dust in it at all. I
got a pallet about this time last year to see me over the winter and
gave some to a friend who has a 4 year old bun who has never been a
hay eater no matter what sort she's tried, but he guzzles down the
stuff from Dustfree. Did you see the pic on the site of all the dust
they get out? Phenomenal!

Generally once they've nibbled the coriander it doesn't grow very
well, but give it a go, you should get at least some regrowth. I
always take the plantpot and plant the whole contents in my garden so
that if it does grow, the Varmints can nibble it.

I wouldn't feed a whole lot at one go though, especially if they
aren't used to it, you don't want to have to wash sticky bums
tomorrow morning! LOL

Accepted all the friendship invites on Bunspace. LOL thought my
bunnies were very popular all of a sudden!

Oh yes, UKCR is really busy again this month. 1393 messages to date
and counting. And half the month still to go. I didn't see your
intro though. I've just checked through the mail for the last 2 days
and don't see it. It must have got delayed somewhere but I'm a group
moderator and messages should come to me if they're delayed. I wonder
if Yahoo is being it's silly self and losing things? My Yahoo mailbox
has crashed on me loads of times today so it's a distinct
possibility. Anyway, looking forward to it showing up. If you don't
see it in the next couple of days, will you pm me and I'll chase up
Yahoo technicians for you. :0)

hi ros!
righty-oh! dustfree it is!..i'm hopong to put an order in next
week! :)
i did see the dust free pic of all the dust they managed to get
out..that really is amazing!
it sure pets regular meadow hay from pet shops in the shade!.

unfortunately, i dont have very good soil in my garden..it is clay
type soil that nothing but grass
and weeds survive in..so any plants like coriander has to stay indoors
in a pot :(
the buns had somme coriander over the weekend and enjoyed it
throughly..they didnt have too#much though!

my mum bought me a mint plant..can bunnies eat mint?

i left a thank you comment from my buns to yours on BS!..some very
kind
bun owner has sponsored the poopers for a month!..so they are basking
in
their VIB status, lol! :D

i checked for my intro message on UKCR but couldnt find it either hun
i posted it either last thursday or friday..so it looks like yahoo has
lost it..which
doesnt suprise me with the amount of technical probs yahell is having
lately..
first 360 and now groups **sighs**.

I think you'll have to post again to UKCR - very nice bunch, very busy
group.

Now then your garden and those weeds..... are they rabbit-edible?
You'd be surprised how many are. btw coriander needs free draining
soil so you're quite right to keep it off clay. Far too cold for the
roots too, with winter coming on.

Here's a list of just some wild plants (aka 'weeds') that are
wonderful fodder for bunnies

blackberry
borage (sometimes called starflower)
broadleaf plantain
caraway
chickweed
chicory
cleavers
clover (meadow) - purple, red or white
coltsfoot
dandelion
lavender
mallow (common)
marigold (English or French but **not** African)
marshmallow
meadowsweet
milk thistle
mint
mustard
nettle (stinging)
raspberry
ribwort
rosebay willowherb (aka fireweed)
shepherd's purse
sow thistle
valerian
watercress
yarrow

As you see, mint is good, but some bunnies won't eat it.... give it a
try and see if Thumper is one of those who will. However I wouldn't
plant it in your garden as it takes over and is very hard to eradicate
once it's taken hold.

Now, seeds for wild plants can be got from www.herbiseed.com and to
find which will grow in your soil, consult the postcode plants
database

hi ros! sorry for the late reply!..my laptop is on the blink (which im
hopefully having mended next week or the week after!) and only works
when it wants too :(

i will go back to the group and post again, though i think im having
problems with yahoo itself..i belong to another yahell group,
and none of the posts i have been sending have reached that group
either :( it may just be me or it could be a problem with yahoo.

my garden is not the greatest for growing bunny friendly weeds!...i
dont know what bad or good weeds look like, so on the safe side, apart
from
dandelions and daisies, i pull them all up..i have had some odd
looking weeds in the garden and i dont want the poopers to get ill, so
i make sure
all weeds are pulled up before they venture out there! :)

intresting that buns can eat lavender!..my mum has some of that
growing in her garden, so i may take a few branches of lav next time i
visit!.

thumps and dinks both loved the mint! :D i only gave them a little at
first, but them seemed to demolish it as soon as i put it down for
them, lol!
i got the mint and the coriander growing in pots in my house (on the
window ledge..dont want the critters eating the whole plant!)

i'll give the wild seeds and soil database a go hun!..i dont hold much
hope out for my clay soil though!

Oh I can appreciate computer problems. My PC died months ago and this
poor little laptop is chugging along with a desk fan blowing on it
permanently to stop it from crashing. No access to MS Office, etc,
etc, etc.

I am so looking forward to getting my new PC in 2 weeks' time.

Another UKCR member had trouble posting just a couple of days ago and
I contacted tech team on her behalf. They claim the problem is sorted
out -we'll see. but if you could give it a go and copy to me offlist
at the same time I'll know to look for your mail and contact the techs
again if it doesn't turn up. My addy I use for that group is
rosgroupsaccount@gmail. com (remove the space after the dot)

Ah well, recognising plants - I've made a photo album on UKCR of
plants that are good feeding for bunnies. Helpful for growing or for
going foraging.

You're right to take out the daisies, but the dandelions are great
eating.

How's Thumper doing? Got over being snipped okay?

hi ros!
oh my, im sooo very sorry for the late reply! :(
my laptop has now been sent off for repairs a little later than i
first hoped..its still there now!
and i have had (and i still have it) a ear infection (the 5th in a
year) which is so bloomin painful that i
havent been able to get online for sometime :(

do you have your new laptop now hun?..i do love laptops..so much more
easier than regular pc's.

well with not being able to access the net since my laptop is away (im
using a friends puter now) i havent
been able to go to the group, so i will go there and try your
suggestion once my lappy is back!..hope that is ok!

i dont think any of my buns have ever eaten daisies..are they
poisonous?

yeah, thumps is doing well recovering form her snip..shes getting
veeerrry big now, lol!..though she still sometimes
gets up to the mischeif she used to before she was snipped and she
still tries to hump dinks..is this normal now she has been done?

she you very soon!..sorry again for the lateness!

Hiya, Trace

Sorry your laptop's taking so long. Personal preference, but I prefer
my PC. I've got my new super-duper, singing, dancing one now -
strongly suspect it can binky too! :D

Mine don't eat daisies. I don't know that they're actually toxic,
just unpalatable. Some grow in my lawn and the Varmints want nothing
to do with them. My horses never showed any interest either. So I
suspect they mustn't taste very nice.

Bunnies may hump at any time, snipped or not. Generally it's to show
that they are the dominant one in a partnership. With the Varmints it
can sometimes lead to a bit of a tiff as each of them thinks, "I'm
boss bun." Somebun tries it on, they do a Keystone Kops round the
living room, a bum gets nipped, the one who got nipped (generally the
would-be humper) slinks off in a huff, then 10 mins later they're all
lovey-dovey again.

I'd keep an eye on Thumps' weight if I was you. They do tend to be a
bit more lethargic after snipping and so they don't burn the calories
so efficiently. If you feel you need to cut back on anything, it
should be pellets as they really don't need very many - just enough to
ensure they've had their daily intake of vitamins and minerals. Hay/
grass/salad leaves/foraged 'weeds' should be the vast bulk of the
diet. Though in this snow you may be less inclined to go out
foraging. Nutmeg has taken a real shine to ribwort though so I know
they'll be sending me out later to find some....

FYI: Another name for those French Marigolds is Calendula. They're
wonderful herbs. Easy to grow. Pretty cold hardy, too. I still have
some in our planter in New England (it had been sub-zero for all last
week!). Our bunnies love them.

German Chamomile is another favorite of our buns. They come back in
the backyard every year (as annuals). Easy to grow.

This past summer, I grow Red Clover from the seeds I harvested from
our nature walks. All you need is some sunshine in summer. They grow
like weeds!

Oh I can't wait for spring!

hi ros!
hehe!..binkying computers!!..i love that! :D i still havent heard
anything about my lappy getting repaired..the last i heard was 3 weeks
ago, so im going to have to chase them up **sighs**.

hehe..if only daisies tasted like dandelions to my buns, then i
wouldnt have so many growing in my garden! :D

you know, the funny thing about "humping bunnies" is its always
thumper doing the humping!..dinky has never shown any intrest in
"bunny lovin'"..the poor soul gets really distressed when thumps tries
to hump him! (ans she's not the least bit bothered at which end of
dink she tries to hump :0) dinks is the sub bunny out of the 2 of
them..he rests his head under her chin all the time..so why thumps
feels she has to assert more dominance on him is a mystery.

haha!..there is a lot of chasing between the 2 of them when the
humping is broken up..they are so funny!..like your buns, there is
chasing, a little fighting and sulking and then its all forgotten
within half an hour!..arn't bunnies so funny?!.

i will keep an eye on thumps weight..cos she is a french lop, and lops
tend to be bigger than other breeds of buns, its difficult to work out
how much they need for their breed. dinks and thumps have a cup and a
half full of pellets a day and veggies too..do you think this is about
right?

have you had snow where you are?..whoa!..we have have not the
slightest snowflake here! **HURRUMPH!**
