I want to get my pet rabbit Harvey neutered, found a vet to do it,
(The only one for a hundred miles) but have run into a snag.

Veterinarian policy require all pets have no food or water for 8 hours
before the procedure.

I know HRS guidelines specify not to do this.

The thing is, Do I find another vet that is two hours away to do it
with an unknown policy of food and water, put Harvey through the
procedure without food or water or leave him unaltered.

For safety reasons I don't want to put Harvey though the procedure if
the risk of harm from GI stasis or worse.

Hi Dennis

You're absolutely right that this shouldn't happen. A bunny would go
into stasis for certain. The anaesthetic compromises the gut anyway
and my vet feeds until half an hour before the op as well as giving a
metaclopromide injection while they're under - for whatever procedure.

I would first try tallking to the vet and explaining that a rabbit's
feeding needs are very similar to a horse's. Your vet probably will
have had scant training at university on how to treat rabbits, but I
suspect will have been told that horses must not be starved. If you
can go armed with the information that like horses, rabbits are
hindgut digesters and must have a constant throughflow of food to the
gut, you may make some headway.

In any case though, I would be very reluctant to use a vet who is not
used to treating rabbits. Would he use the correct anaesthetic?
Would he keep Harvey warm during surgery? Would he use an operating
bed that was raised at the head end to ensure that Harvey's breathing
wasn't compromised?

Is there an HRS chapter anywhere near you? (I'm assuming you're in the
USA?) If so would they be able to recommend a good vet? Could you
get info from rabbitsonline? They have vets recommended by location.
www.rabbitsonline.net Their list is only for members so you would
have to join to access it.

I wish you good luck but I think you would be right into suspect that
this vet could do more harm than good to Harvey.

I'll try that and see if I get somewhere.

The vet's office worker doing the procedure says that they do this
procedure approx. 3 times a month.

Now to find the nearest chapter to me. I live in the northwest corner
of North Carolina so the nearest one would be Charleston, SC but their
is a rescue mission nearby called the Rabbit Rescue of the Triad.
Maybe they can help.

Dennis, is it okay with you if I forward your message to some friends
who may be able to offer practical help or at least advice? People
who live in SC (I think!)

I've posted a request this morning. Any replies that come to the
forum I posted on I'll forward to you. I gave the link to this thread
so they can read our whole conversation.

In the meantime, are you a member of rabbitsonline? They have a list
of bunny savvy vets recommended by members. www.rabbitsonline.net
(this is not the .org site which is a different organisation) The
vets list is in the thread called 'The Infirmary' and is divided by
country and by US State. I'll copy the NC entries below.

Also there is www.rabbitvet.net and the HRS list

Right here's what is on Rabbitsonline

The following is the House Rabbit Society link for Rabbit

What I need is a vet that is less than two hours drive time from me.
I live in Boone, NC, one hour from the Tennessee- Virginia border,
the closest vets on the list is over two hours away. A list of vets
in the south west Virginia- north east Tennessee Area would help.
Maybe Bristol Tennessee if possible. OR even better a little
convincing of the local vet of the House rabbit guidelines.

Dennis, I've just got back here so haven't fully read your message yet
- but shall in a moment.

I've had one response from the forum I posted on, which said what we
all already know -

"Pre-op fasting for a rabbit should be a maximum of 2 hours. Anything
more than that could invite stasis. The vet will also want to get the
rabbit eating a.s.a.p. post-op. When I've taken rabbits in for spay/
neuter, I take some hay and veggies to insure that there is something
immediately available for a rabbit or guinea pig when they wake up
after surgery."

Right - off I go to Rabbitsonline to find the info for you. Are you
not a member? That would make it easy for you to find it. It does
seem a bit silly me finding what I *think* is correct when I have
scant idea of your country's geography. :)

was wonderful, and they allowed me to be with SA while they not only
administered sub-Q fluids, but showed me how to do it. They also kept
him for three days to make sure that he was coming out of the episode,
and that it would not recur. I did have to bring his greens and hay

reasonable. I plan to take my year old female, and SA's new bondmate,

That's great news. Dennis.

Now to transport. Are you going to ask for Bunderground help? Lana
at Rabbitwise may be able to help organise something for you.

I make arrangements around Christmas time. I'll have a ride by then,
I think.

hi dennis and harvey!
i recently had my bunny, thumper neautered and the vet specifically
instructed me to CONTINUE feeding thumper right up until the morning
of the op!..its very dangerous to a bunnies' health for them to be
deprived of food and water for even the shortest amount of time!..i
suspect this vet does'nt know a great deal about bunnies and is
probley only used to dealing with dogs and cats...i would definately
seek out another vet if possible and when you do, question there
policies on neautering and feeding before operations.
i would most certainly not risk harveys' health in the hands of a vet
that doesnt know what hes' doing..it would be safer to leave bunny
unaltered.
best wishes for you and bunny!!
