hi!
i have a query about the age a female bun can be neutered.
my girl bunny, thumper is 4 months old, and is displaying the same
signs my older male bunny (dinky) displayed when it came time for him
to be neutered, (i.e. being very discructive and pee-peeing in places
she should'nt be pee-peeing in.)
the problem is is that dinks is 4 1/2 yrs old now and i dont remember
how old he was when he had the "snip"..is 4 months too young for a
bunny to be neutered?..should i wait for her to get a bit older or can
she be neutered at the age she is now?

any advice would be appretiated!
thanks! :)

Hi Sailorbunny :)
I'd wait a bit, till she's at least 5 month old. So says the Textbook
of Rabbit Medicine (F. Harcourt-Brown), and "Immature females have
thread-like uterine horns and tiny ovaries that can be very difficult
to locate." Besides, sex hormones help develop muscles and bones,
premature spay/neuter might make them weaklings, imho.

For the time being, she can wear a bunderwear! haha... Get an extra
small pantie (or a kid size one), cut the sides, attach a velcro
closure, add a pantie liner, and Thumper is good to go! Oh, and make
sure to take a pic of Thumper wearing the bunderwear, and share with
us ;)

Some vets will do it at 4 months, but I'd recommend hanging on till
she's 6 months so that she's well on in her development. You'll
probably find that until she's 'done' she'll start having some phantom
pregnancies, (pluck out her fur and nest-build, lining it with the
plucked fur) You don't need to worry about that, it's perfectly
natural.

After 6 months you're starting to get into danger times for pyometra
and ovarian/uterine cancers (though in most cases that wouldn't be
likely till a bun is over a year) so 6 months is about the ideal time
to have the op.

I hope it goes well when you have her done.
