Just wanted to know if anyone could give me some advice. I have a 1981
VW Rabbit Gasoline 1.7 Liter that I recently purchased. When I drive I
notice that there is a slightly loud banging noise when I go over bumps or
even small rivets in the road, the ride is also extremely rough. The seller
told me he had replaced the springs, but do I need to maybe replace the
struts or shocks. Also when I hit about 45+ MPH the steering wheel shakes
and vibrates along with that feels like the front end of the car. If
someone could please lend there expertise I would appreciate it.

A bad strut cartridge could explain your noise, as could a worn upper
strut mount. I'm not sure what "slightly loud" means, though. Can you
feel the shock, or just hear it? If it occurs over even small bumps, as
you say, a bad upper strut mount is more likely. But unless the upper
strut mount is extremely worn, it would not account for the shaking at
45 mph. A bad strut cartridge could account for the shaking, as could
an out-of-balance tire or one with tread separation. Rotating tires
front to back would resolve the question of whether a tire was to blame
for the shaking.

I don't have my Bentley manual here, so can't check to see if the upper
strut mount can be replaced safely without a spring compressor. If a
spring compressor is required, then removing the spring and checking the
strut cartridge would be wise anyway. It would also be wise to check
that everything was reinstalled correctly when the seller replaced the
springs. It would have been logical to replace any bad strut cartridges
or upper strut mounts then, so the noise and shaking should be cause for
concern about proper reassembly. Check also to see that the springs
have short lengths of hose slipped over each end of the springs to help
reduce noise. Good luck.
