"First, Second, Third, .....E?" What is the E gear?

does E mean...and how is it used? Is it like a 4th gear? Also does anyone
have backround history on that gear or anything?

I think it means economy. It is actually an overdrive.
Using the Bentley manual, I recently compared the gear
ratio tables of my '82 Jetta five speed, and my '84 Rabbit
four speed with E. Both cars are 1.6NA diesels.
The first, second, and third gears in both cars are identical.
The overdrive ratios in both cars, fourth in the Rabbit, and fifth
in the Jetta, are identical also.
So in this case, at least, the four speed transmission is missing
only the fourth gear from the five speed car. Everything else is
identical.
This is true for diesels. I cannot verify the information for gas
cars, but they likely correlate as well.

a diesel. The original sales brochure for the 1982 Rabbit that I have says:
"Unique E-mode feature of the automatic transmission for the diesel Rabbit lets
you stop power transfer when coasting or when waiting at traffic lights. The
advantage is a steady, smooth diesel engine at idle without 'traffic light
creep.' Just press the accelerator pedal to reestablish power transfer."
