Hello,
I am building a bot that has dual y axis steppers.  I do not necessarily need the extruder driver E, could I set it up through firmware to have the E be a slave to the y driver?  Of course, this additional y stepper would need to go in the reverse direction to the original y stepper as they are mirrored.  The steppers I am using are:
  • Nema 17
  • 4.4 Kg.cm
  • 1.68 A (each phase)
  • 2.8 V
  • 2.8 mH

Any hints to getting this working would be very appreciated

I don't understand the application. Can you explain better?

If this 2 motors work together, you can connect them in series.
The stepper motor have 2 coils(A and B). Connect in series de coil A from one motor with coil B of other.
This way the steppers will move synchronized in opposite direction.

Hello Francisco,
Thank you for the response.  I was thinking of doing them in series, but is it not better to connect them to two different drivers?  I have two motors on y, one motor on x, and one motor on z.
As you mention, we could run two motors off of the y driver in series.  Another option I was thinking is to use the E driver (I do not need to extrude with this and for my application will be left empty).  So my question was if it was possible to set up the E driver to be a slave of the Y driver?

Best,
Luis

Are you referring to this image?  I am doing this, but the motors are moving in the opposite directions...

I am doing something similar to this, but the USB connection keeps dropping out after a few jogs of 5mm in y.  They are indeed going in the same direction though...

No.
If you want them to work synchronized the series connection is the best solution. Simpler to implement. Depend only on wiring.

If you configure E axis with same parameters has Y axis on config.txt (configuration file resident on uSD card), you can send G code for both axis like this:
G1 Yxx Exx
Config.txt
steps_per_mm_e = x
steps_per_mm_x = x

Hello Francisco,
I ended up wiring them in series.  Things are moving quite nicely.  Thanks!

I'm glad I could help.
I would like to know more about your project and how useful was the R2C2. Send some pictures or youtube videos if possible.
Regards,

Francisco,
Project is now moving (very beautifully I might add!), but there are some other things to do...I will ask in another thread. For a bit of info, I am driving a shapeoko with the system.

Thanks!
Luis
