(Beginner question) Consequences of applying model with spatial correlation despite no improvement in DIC/WAIC.

If one assumes spatial (or spatial-temporal) correlation a priori based on the field sampling design and fits an INLA model with spatial (or spatial-temporal) correlation accordingly, is there anything wrong with using this model versus one without the correlation structure if the former doesn’t improve (reduce) the DIC/WAIC by at least 10 points or so relative to the latter? Thank you.

nothing wrong using this model as long as you make the assumptions clear. like,
that the spatial range and/or temporal range is set (and then fixed), then under
this scenario, this is what you get. you can try different scenarios and see how
sensitive this assumption is
